Excellent Sophomore Albums

...it's the Beatles...there is no "better"...(in case you're wondering, this is a positive statement, pro-Beatles...you know, the ones who changed musical history...)
Solid seconds, not necessarily better than the first, though in some cases yes. Just off the top of my head:
Lynyrd Skynyrd - Second Helpings
Black Sabbath - Paranoid
Led Zepplin - II
R.E.M. - Reckoning
Santana - Abraxas
Allman Brothers Band - Idlewild South
Grateful dead - Anthem of the Sun
Someone mentioned 4th albums... Alice Cooper's Killer is my all time favorite album by Alice.
As for why? Possibly just the fact that they've already got an album under their belt. Hopefully they learned a lot, and the label is willing to invest more in them later. They've also had to be really serious about their playing on tour. The fortunate ones no longer have day jobs that aren't the band.

Quite surprised - this being a Bass forum - that Dream Theater haven't had a mention. Their first album; 'When dream and day unite' was easily surpassed by 'Images and Words' which according to Wiki has remained their best selling album with Pull me Under remaining their most successful single.
Strong songs, killer guitar playing. Vito Bratta was one of the most musical rock guitarists of any generation. Though heavily influenced by EVH, he was hardly a clone...he also had that elusive musicality that few players like EVH have...the deep rhythm playing, tone for days, inventive riffs, and technical skills matched with a rare gift for melodicism.

That was their first album and I'd agree their best. But "Recovering the Satellites", their second album, was also very good. I liked it a lot more after I saw them tour it. Sometimes you have to see songs played live to connect with them.
True, though their previous albums far surpassed anything they recorded afterward.
The second album by The Insect Trust, "Hoboken Saturday Night", Atco Records far surpassed their first album on Capitol, "The Insect Trust". If you have never heard or heard of them you are seriously missing out.
