Ok, so today I spent 3 or 4 hours auditioning basses at Bob Beerman's shop. I was thinking about getting some upgrades to my old Kay to make it more arco-friendly, but Bob talked me out of it. He really didn't like the idea of me making any changes to my great sounding, great playing, mostly-original Kay.
Since I love the Kay, the solution seems obvious: I need to buy a 2nd carved bass to develop as an arco player. But here's the weird thing: I wouldn't ever hardly take it out of the house! 80% or more of the playing I do on gigs is pizzicato, and I need my Spiro/Kay sound for that. If I bought a 2nd bass, I'd be like a closet arco player, and probably spend all my time at home practicing on an instrument that I wouldn't be performing on. It's just messed up! The Kay always feels like coming home, but I fear that if I'm spending too much time playing another bass it'll start to feel uncomfortable when I need to take it out...
Does anybody else have a similar performance/practice routine? How weird does it get?
