Expand TB Services: Instant Messaging & Group Chat

It'd be really cool if there were a chat server for the Community. It could be embedded, optionally. Or, solely run in another browser tab/window and/or client application.

Take a look into the following:

Covers a handful. I suggest looking into the top 3.

IRC and XMPP are the trusty old open standards that are continually improved. Matrix is the hot new thing. All have a fair amount of features these days.

Rocket Chat I'm least familiar with other than the MMORPG, The Saga of Ryzom, uses it in their game and on their website. It works fine for that and might be okay here. I'm not sure what it's like to run. The others might have more interesting features but, worth looking into!

Personally, I ran a Matrix server with Synapse and Element. With the amount of members here already, I advise waiting until Dendrite is more stable and feature-rich. Otherwise, Synapse can take too many resources.

I suggest:
• retroactively creating accounts for each forum member
• chatroom for each subforum
• chatrooms for Clubs
• supporting members only chat
• self-hosting rather than I.e. paying IRC Cloud or Matrix to host servers
• Not disallowing federation with other servers. How cool would it be to tell people to IM them at a TB screen name‽

It's not instead of, it's in addition to.

Instant messaging and chatrooms people idle in are a different way to communicate. People might like it!
Plus, a few listed above support A/V calling either 1-to-1 or as a group conference. This could be very useful for people getting to know each other. Clubs could have monthly meetings this way perhaps!
