In some ways, yes.
Musicians at that level have the luxury to be able to afford those types of high end basses and ironically they sometimes don't even have to pay for them.
It's very lucrative for these companies to endorse these artists. It's no doubt that people will go out and get their favorite bass heroes bass no matter what the cost. Will they sound just like their favorite bass hero? Of course they won't.
Are you suggesting that what makes those top players so great is their expensive basses?

Well, you better start running, 'cause he's right behind you.....with, what looks like.....a bottle of ..... mustard(?)![]()
Eh, he's like 6'2" and I'm 5'6" @128lbs soaking wet. My only real defense is a sub 5 minute mile.

All vintage basses, this way please

Wow.In guitarland, you make a decent-quality Strat-copy, and you're done.
At the risk of having my head chewed off....
There isn't much of a point. Unless you are looking to impress other bass players here at talkbass or a handful of people at shows that might say, "Hey, that's a pretty bass."
I'm more into the function of a bass then it's aesthetics, which is usually what you are paying for with a higher end bass. I've played quite a few super high end basses at the stores and I've only been impressed by a couple of them, but nothing impressive enough to warrant the price tag. How much time do you actually spend staring at your bass while you are playing it anyway?

John Turner, I think you're right -- to a certain extent: There *are* a lot of guys for whom it's all about the sour grapes.
That being said, if I looked at my bass buying habits by asking 'is this $4000 Sadowsky actually $3000 better than this $1000 MIA Fender?', then I guarantee you that all these perfectly good Canadian dollars I've been piling up towards my NYC Sadowsky buy would be doing much more useful things at the moment.
It's just a variant on the 'Is X bass worth $XXXX.XX' question that gets asked ad nauseam around here. My answer is always 'Empirically? Hellm no. But why look at things empirically?'
By the way:
perfektspace6, I figure that, based on your avatar, you either think that the forthcoming Fallout 3 ruins the charm of the two previous games or you really can't wait to get your hands on it.
as for the topic, i wasn't saying sour grapes, i was saying that a whole bunch of folks are talking about a whole buncha stuff that they don't know a whole bunch about.
but what would the internet be without folks offering their considered opinions on something they have no knowledge or experience with?![]()
I'm getting pretty tired of the whole "People who think SX basses are decent don't know what they are talking about" business.
