Experiences with EV Evolve 30M or 50M ?

So @pfschim , did you order the 50M yet?
well, the duo just finished a pretty solid set of dates and now I have some time to think (and just play bass with a few of my other bands) before the next group of duo dates in Aug.

So, no 50M yet, but I have not made any other decision either.

thanks for asking, stay tuned!

I have a sound guy buddy near Joshua Tree, Cochella Valley that likes his 50's. Primarily they are rentl inventory for him. One of my guitarists bought an L1 Pro8 last year. So I bought one and we ran the pir for a while. I sold mine a couple of months back - not happy with the mechanics. The column connections are kinda light and they need more meat to align properly.

I bought a pair of Yamaha DLX1K. This is the external speaker version of their Stage PAS system. Two XLR in plus Link in/out. Volume per channel, Master Vol and a one know tome control that goes from Speech, through Music to club. I dodn't need ot want the built in mixer fof the Stage PAS. Got the Ui-24r, Flow8 and XR-18 - need another mixer like a hole in my head ;-)

These are much more robustly built than the Bose. They have 12" woofers a slew of little drivers in the column. Overall they sound nice. Have a much more authoritative low end - on a few dates for my vocal trio with acoustic guitar, roland hand sonic and my EUB, I skipped the amp... We are not loud and that might not work for everybody, no question.

I landed these at under $900 per unit in a transport bag from my typical Ymh source. There is ad olly that the bag attaches to. $112 off Amazon. I just bought one and will clone it next week.

IMO - these beat the hell out of the L1 Pro8. How they stack aginst the Evolve 50 and the RCF Jvox - no idea...

hey thanks for the info 4Mal. Unfortunately I am interested in the mixer being built into the unit. As has been documented, my Ui24r is no more, so the 8 channel EV still seems like a simple and effective way to go, at least for the duo project.

I'm definitely kind of waffling on this decision though, because (as previously stated) I'd really rather NOT run sound at all ... it just takes my focus away from playing and not in a very rewarding way. OTOH, PA is still going to be needed for this project and my duo partner is not likely to step up to running sound. The all-in-one type systems seem like they would be much easier to set up/tear down with fewer cabling and power requirements. But in the duo, we've been talking about trying to go IEM, and as far as I can see, the all-in-one systems do not allow that to happen ... which brings me all the way back around to considering a new digital mixer. Sheesh!

In many circumstances, you don’t need IEMs or floor monitors with stick PAs. Especially just a duo. Their huge area of coverage envelops you on stage. You hear what the audience hears. OP is way overthinking this!
well, I have no experience with these systems and I have read mixed reviews about potential feedback issues when the all-in-one systems are placed behind performers and used for monitoring too.

I don't doubt what you're saying, but again, I have no direct experience at this point.

In my experience placing a stick array behind a mic allows more gain before feedback than you probably expect. There are definitely limits though.

That was the original idea for the Bose systems, with each player or vocalist with their own column. No sound man required. A bandmate of mine played trumpet in the band that Bose sent on the road to perform at trade shows and clinics and loved it. Very expensive setup for a large band (bass and drums had to use multiple subs…ugh) but it filled theaters easily.

I don’t see any bands using them that way, though.

I've only ever seen 2 full columns at once, and mostly I just see 1. These are generally for small/medium sized venues and very modest volumes.

If I go this route, it will just be a single sub & stick system.

I gigged in a trio for while where the BL used one the biggest single Bose systems (pro 32 I think) with the add-on mixer (ToneMatch ?). Even though I used a small (1x12) bass rig, that system could easily handle bass duties for a small, moderate volume trio IME.

well, that would be great and probably cover any monitoring needs then, making it an even more attractive option as far as total parts to load in/out and connect.

You definitely want to test the setup in the configuration you need to use. I can't find any official Bose guidance regarding how far behind the artist the array should be.

One thing to keep in mind is SPL drops over distance. With the musicians closest to the array, they will hear the highest SPL. This might be an advantage in some situations.

That is in fact how they typically get used, but that’s not at all what Bose was intending when they designed the L1.
A band I was in (gosh, gotta be 13 yrs ago) had TWO L1 systems. Used them in the small rehearsal space and they were awesome. Used them on one gig and that was it. Didn’t cut it. Went with the standard PA stack.
However I HAVE done 20+ gigs with a 50M setup (one tower each side) in smaller venues (American Legion, VFW’s, some sports bars-type venues…) and they were more than adequate. Small. Easy load in and setup.
They’re great if you’re not needing rock concert levels at the local park.

As far as the Bose setup. The Bose Tonematch mixer has (or had) an anti-feedback capability. It had a limited number of bands available. You had to be real careful not to be between the stick and any live mics when setting that up. If you were blocking a mic, it might never be seen by the anti-feedback gizmo before all the filters were assigned... It was remarkably slow to reassign a filter frequency.

Personally, Bose isn't on my list of pro audio suppliers. YMMV but I doubt it in the long term...

Hello everyone,

I have an EV Evolve 30M and I regularly perform live gigs in a restaurant. The restaurant has an XLR wall socket that is connected to its in-house speaker system.

The problem is that when I connect my EV Evolve 30M to that wall socket, I don’t get any sound through the restaurant speakers. In the EV QuickSmart app, I have tried setting the output to both Mix Out and Aux Out, but neither works. I have also tried enabling the connection on both my EV Evolve and the restaurant’s mixer.

What could I be doing wrong, and what is the correct way to connect everything?

The wall socket is XLR, and I connect the other end of the cable directly to my EV Evolve 30M. Do I perhaps need an external mixer between the EV Evolve and the restaurant’s wall socket?

Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

There should be no need for a separate mixer.

I suggest experimenting at home to make sure the mix out is configured properly. AFAIK the nominal level is 4dBu (line level). So make sure whatever you use for the experiment can deal with line level. If you don't own an appropriate piece of gear, can you borrow?

If the mix out and XLR cables is confirmed good, then you can move on to figuring out how to get the house speaker to work. Does something need to be turned on or adjusted?

Per the manual the mix out level is determined by the inputs and also a master. The level of the mix out is directly related to how loud the 30M is turned up. So if you are running the 30M really softly, you won't get a very strong signal on the mix out. You need some way of balancing the level of the house speakers with the level of your 30M. Hopefully there is an inline level control for the house.

Thank you for your reply i really appreciate your help. I tried adjusting the level also.
I changed the input on the restaurant sound system that should be receiving the signal from the external socket, but I’m not getting any signal at all.

I might try increasing the volume, but I don’t think the issue is related to the level. It seems that the system isn’t receiving any signal from my EV Evolve.

The restaurant speakers are working properly, so that shouldn’t be the problem. The cables are also brand new, so I don’t suspect a hardware issue there either.

I believe I’m simply making a mistake somewhere in the app settings, or I’m not routing/sending the signal correctly from the EV Evolve to the restaurant’s speaker system.
