I'm late (as usual), but it was a name bestowed on me early in my army career by a tuba player.....and boy howdy did it stick!

Didn't he co-write "The Mote in God's Eye" ? Which is one of my favourite sci-fi books of all time. I was inspired by this to look at some of his other stuff, but was a bit disappointed with this - any suggestions for his best work?

I'm the biggest Niven fan you're gonna meet. What did you read and find disappointing? I think some of his better work is his short story writing, "N-Space" and "Playgrounds Of The Mind" are both very good. As for his novels, I really like the stuff he does with Jerry Pournelle, "Footfall", "Lucifer's Hammer", and your favorite "The Mote In God's Eye", which by the way has a sequel, "The Gripping Hand". Also good were a pair of books written by Niven, Pournelle, and Steven Barnes "The Legacy of Heorot" and "Beowulf's Children". His best solo writing, in my opinion, is the "Ringworld" series. He made some science/mathmatical errors in the first book, and actually wrote the second to "fix" them. Also fun to read are the "Man - Kzin Wars" collections, while not written by Niven, they're written within a "universe" he created, and he does edit them. He has written some stuff that didn't really impress me though, maybe you stumbled onto one of those?

My dad collected Niven, so I have a pretty good background on him. Here is what we have:

Lucifer's Hammer (my personal fav)
Convergent Series
A Gift from Earth
The Ringworld series; Ringworld, The Ringworld Engineers, and The Ringworld Throne
The Intergral Trees and The Smoke Ring, a series
Destiny's Road
The Mote in God's Eye
The Barsoom Project (another good one)
World of Ptavvs
Oath of Fealty
The Flight of the Horse
All the Myriad Ways
The Magic Goes Away
Footfall (another good one)

I don't read him that much anymore. I am more into Timothy Zahn, Michael A. Stackpole and Aarron Allston. They write Star Wars books, but their other Sci-fi works are pretty good, too.

My real last name is the same as an old "brother" act from Georgia
(but spelled slightly differently)

not ~ I develop software in another life. In logic `ya got stuff like A = (not)B

not ~ Also, as you may have guessed from other posts I'm not a big fan of guitarists

Therefore  yes that is my real last name but no I'm not a redneck guitarist

Mine is a nickname I've had since I was born. Herm, is short for Hermansen, my last name.

Somebody came up with another meaning of it in another forum somewhere, and it might have meant what he said it was, but it wasn't where I got my nickname, and it was way off.

I am little Herm, and my brother is big Herm. Nicknames we were given when he was taller than me (35 years ago). Now I'm tall than him, and I'm still little Herm. Oh well!

Um, I play mostly heavy metal and the Latin(?) ending -arch means "to rule", ie monarch (one rules), oligarch (few rule), and metalarch (metal rules). I added 69 because I registered as metalarch and the server wouldn't accept my password, so I had to re-register. And '69 was the year that Woodstock took place. Besides, on AIM, 9: looks kinda like bass clef.

I CAN´T TELL EITHER. BUT I CAN TELL THAT YOU USE CAPS LOCK ALOT! IT´S HARDER TO READ SOMETHING IN CAPS LOCK AND IT LOOKS LIKE YOUR SHOUTING! SO HOW ABOUT NOT DOING IT? (especially in your profile.. I just stopped reading 'cause I didn´t want to read it like this)

enough said...

btw... I don´t mean to sound like a total *******... caps lock just irritates me... :)

OK, better late than never, though my nick is as boring as they come...

J and M are my initials (clever, huh?) - and X marks the spot...

I'd like to have a much cooler nick, but I don't have any cool ideas, and it makes for some consistency in the numerous forums that let my in (occasionally)...

Not my real name (it's Jonathan). It's from the SNL sketch where John Goodman and a couple other guys are at a bar and talking about Bill Brasky and going on and on about it. Me and my friends like to do this sometimes too, and just act really loud and belligerent about it.
So, Bill Brasky runs about 6 foot 8. 380 pounds... One time Bill Brasky ate a circus midget. Brasky uses a live rattlesnake for a condom! One time Brasky made me wear a bikini to work. Of couse all my friends laughed at me, but I'll be damned if my sales weren't up 20% that week!
To Bill Brasky!!!!
