that is really nice work. the led around the logo is a nice custom touch. the original hiwatt style box is nice also, but i 100% like that you made them match.

i had a local guy do my traynor box above. really happy, just getting a custom traynor/hiwatt logo made

wild idea, “furniture amp”. build a cab/head to blend in with a room for home use.

My friend got a quote from the tech, replacing all tubes and fees, cost more than half the price of the amp.

He was asking me if he should just buy a new amp

He should be glad he doesn't live in the hifi world of tubes!

1250 watts with 24 6550s. Per channel.

Are the tubes actually bad, or is this because your friend heard on the internet that it was necessary and the tech saw an opportunity to eat well thst week?

i see what you just did there.

ironically they just released three more tube emulations for their dark-glass multi fx pedal. my virtual pedal board is getting huge. the darkglass anagram is amazing.

They haven't made them in quite a while. Apparently with the first version, they recommended biasing every month. Each tube individually! The later version did this automatically.

I really enjoyed playing through this power amp, but at 125lbs, I much prefer my MG800. Or even MG350.

125 lbs is a lot. my rule is that once something surpasses 43% of body weight… we have gone too far. unless it looks cool. i now want a 24 6550 amp just so i can show up at the local jazz gig stating i need the “clean headroom”. Clean headroom for those a block away also.

Something like a 4x15 to sit discreetly next to the TV perhaps?

gotta admit it guys. i think i talked too much class d trash in this thread and one of the class d guys must have voodoo dolled my 70’s v4b. Or maybe i plugged it into a 4ohm cab with the head set at 8. pretty sure it was the voodoo doll. anyway, low distorted output and a trip to my amp mechanic with tail between legs.

i had got back my yba100 and it felt a lot quieter so i wanted to go 100w vs 100w in the same cab. the comparo will be delayed of course, but i am thinking the yba100 just has a more linear output (less early, but similar output later). cant say for sure though cause for some reason my v4b sounded like cold mush.

Always remember, there were amp repair shops with stacks of amps to be repaired long before Class D came into the amp market.
And with a lot of the current shops refusing to work on Class D amps, none class D amps going down are still what keeps them fed.

You may have already checked this but if you were swapping cabs around on the vintage V4 make sure you didn’t plug into the extension speaker jack. The main output on the vintage amps has a ground short so you need to use that jack first. If you plug into the extension only you’ll get a sound similar to what you’re describing - low and distorted.
