"Explosive Ibanez" Takes Flight

Today I sprayed my 4th primer coat on the body. I think color is next. I'm not sure if I'm 100% about the primer. It just seems lumpy. With this in mind, I bought a different primer for my pickups, and it lays down beautifully.
So I started my pickups prep and prime today. I'm either really creative or totally insane to experiment with $200 in pickups.
Here they are, out of the box.
I took each of them and mounted them to little cardboard mounts. This keeps the pickup off the surface of my paint board and it also protects the electronic connectors. I also hit each of them with steel wool and an alcohol rub down. The steel wool was to score the surface so the paint sticks, and the alcohol to keep the paint surface free from any oils.
This is after the initial dusting coat. I guess dusting allows the following coat to adhere better???

They will look cool when they are the same color as the body and that explosive symbol is painted over it.

enamel primers get bumpy and lumpy because they dry so quickly, some of the particles dry between the spray tip and the contact surface, a light sanding with 400, and the surface will be perfectly smooth, and ready for color.
Both primers I used are enamel (I think) and the second type I bought isn't bad at all.
OOH! what if you painted the pickups with one of the other kinds of paint? that could look super cool! also are the emg logo things concave, convex or just painted on?

I also masked off the inside of the control cavity, so it stays white. I kind like that internal color contrast. It reminds me of my days in the Air Force when I would unscrew a gray panel, and it would be that zinc green color underneath.

too late now but inverting the colors over the pups would have worked as well.
Meaning where the black line on the orange body would become an Orange line on the Black pup, either way I'm digging this build on account that the OSHA Palette is prevalent at my power plant. And apparently, Alliteration is as well.

How about orange calcite for fretboard dot enlays?

Looks great. I have a problem with my paint. I put the bass on its guitar stand and 2 imprints are now on the back of the bass. Paint is soft.Bummer.

You were in the air force? O.O just wow...
You sprayed randomly to get that kinda finish didnt you? Are you going to start adding other colours to make the paint a bit abstract? If so... THATS AWESOME

Yes, I was a "Junior Bird Man". LOL! My Army buddies bust my chops about my posh military lifestyle, but it's all in fun.
What I've read, a "dusting" coat allows the following spray to stick nicely. Also, it's better to spray thin coats, so they can dry thoroughly. I didn't do this on my Joan Rivers bass, and the finish came out so soft. It was so soft that if laid on a towel, the towel would leave imprints in the finish.
Today, I was home from work. I had a stuffy nose, and my boss is a germophobe. We have a standing order that if he can detect that we have any illness, we must leave. Seeing that I have like 3,000,000 hours of sick time, I didn't feel too bad about staying home.
Do I stay home? Heck no! I make a beeline to my folks house to add a coat to my project! I sprayed the 4th primer coat on my pickups, and the 2nd color coat on my body.
Its becoming less patchy looking, and the finish is still laying down nicely.
The black hardware is going to really make it look bad ass.

Generally I try to shoot paint on the "hard to reach" places first, that makes it much easier to get to if you have to sand it back.
