"Explosive Ibanez" Takes Flight

Remember those chromed out spinner wheels people put on their cars? Remember those fake spinner hub caps? I get the same vibe from the FretFX. Maybe it's just me?
5 more coats of clear!

WTH wrong with spinners?

I finished the sanding portion starting with 400 grit, 600, 1,000, 1,200, and finishing with 1,500. I also used this rotten stone stuff to get even more of a smoother surface. I dried off the body and here is the end result. Today, I will buff and wax the body to get the shine and luster back up.

Yesterday, I buffed and waxed the body. I didn't want it super shiny, because of how it would amplify the imperfections in the body, but I think I turned out okay.

Next, I removed all the excess wax and debris to make room for the bridge ferrules.

Because of all the paint and clear buildup, the ferrules wouldn't fit. I had to break out the Dremel to make room. If I ever do thus project again, I will plug these holes.

After fitting the ferrules, I grinded the paint off the access panel threaded brass inserts.

I dry fitted the pickups to see how they'd actually look inlaid into their cavities. It all lines up, thank god!

I also installed the bridge and attempted to install my strap locks. Unfortunately, the previous fastener used on this bass was thicker. So now I have to dowel and redrill the holes. No worries. Hopefully this should be going to setup by next week.

That was my glitch. I thought you could move photos to different albums, but I was wrong. Anyways, I started some electronics last night. My soldering continues to improve but I learned a few things.

When starting a soldering job, use new soldering pen tips. Yes, it took me 4 bass projects to figure this out. Needless to say, the new tip and worked great. Also, if you suspect the solder you're using is older than you; buy a new roll. Learn from my stupidity.

Also, hot soldering pen and guitar finish don't mix. I'm an idiot, but I can probably spot paint my mistake. :crying:

I'm still working on smoothing out the finish on the pickups, so I wired all of the electronics except the pickup wires.

Here you can see where I screwed up the paint on the bottom of the cavity lip. Doh!

When I get all the wires installed and it works, I will heat those shrink tubes holding my wire bundles together.

If you use a piece of sandpaper too remove the gunk from the end of your soldering tips it should make them last longer and function like new, rather than just pitching them; Using a tip tinner helps with that too. If your solder is getting old, I'd just get a little bit of flux (it looks like apple jelly in a tub) from an electronics store like Radio Shack, it lasts forever and you can just brush a little on anywhere you're worried about corrosion.

I know you weren't asking for help, but I figured I'd try anyways; especially since your build is one of my favorites on TB.

Keep up the awesome work!

I appreciate the help. I'm borderline ********, so any bit helps. Thanks!
