Extended Range Bass Club Thread (Part 2)

I recently restrung my Stambaugh 6 from standard into 5ths (A-G#) and holy mother of god. What a difference. Other than the scale, I don't even feel like I'm playing a bass anymore; more like some sort of long-scale hybrid. It's been very inspiring, to say the least.

The strings are from Circle K, btw, and I can't speak highly enough of them.

The body is a mix of Alan's design cues.
Hipshot's on deck to custom fabricate a more ERB friendly head piece.

That's really nice. I've been designing a single-cut fanned fret 9-string (39.5" to 33.5"), but having trouble with the headstock. Provided Hipshot or ETS are down, I think I've just decided that headless is the way to go.

The acoustic 7 string guitar has finish on it and it's curing. Should be getting the bridge glued on in about a week or so.

On the Hipshot headpiece:
Alan was having trouble getting the largest gauge strings to work with the stock model.
I submitted a mod to the Hipshot design to put less stress on the heavier strings.
A trade off with the mod is the headpieces won't accomodate double ball strings, which is hardly relevant for ERBs.
Alan has them fabricating 9 and 10 string versions for his two ERB projects.

You can also check out Prat Bass for their fanned headless approach.

Nice work from both of those guys.

I think I might hold off on the headless option for now, if only for the cost savings since I have the tuners and bridge saddles on hand to actually build with my design.

All-in-all, I don't think my design looks half bad with a headstock.

Still planning on buying an ESP sixer, I have a Squier MB-5 and have much interest in ERB's. My buddy has Bill Conklin's first 9 string bass, and good god... what a beauty. Even in my 5er doesn't qualify me, both parts one and two of this club have been educational, inspiring, and has added drastically to my G.A.S.

A 5 is extended, as 4 is standard and even a 4 tuned BEAD or ADGC or even Piccolo would be considered Extended if I'm not mistaken.
