Extended Range Bass (Club??) Thread

Welcome Lefty@best ... #050 ...

There are a lot of very knowledgeable players in this thread, so this is a nice way to get acquainted with extended range basses. Don't be afraid to ask questions .... ;)

If you keep your eyes open you can occasionally grab a Conklin GT-7 on Ebay for pretty cheap .... I have a GT-7 still hanging around that I defretted about a year ago, I got that one on Ebay for less than $400 shipped. But they're usually around $650-$800 ...

I'm a little late but count me in....

WOW! Whats your tuning on this?

Have you guys seen this? There's a lot of misinformation going on.

As you (of all people) are well aware Jauqo, those particular discussions regarding F# (and lower) notes always deteriorate into all sorts of topics that have little to do with reality. There are usually people with "laboratory" testing data stating how impossible it is to hear these notes in a real-time setting, along with those who suggest that you need massive cabs and monster amps to reproduce these ranges.

My problem with those threads is that I'm just some old fool playing basses with too many strings that have low notes, not a technical person at all. I know that my stock MarkBass stuff reproduces an F# without any issues .... is it a fundamental or a harmonic? ... I don't care, it sounds like an F# to me ;). I'm not well equipped to argue that point with some engineering-minded person. I can imagine that your C# discussions must be very frustrating for you ....

If people would simply listen without trying to dissect every nuance of the technical aspects, maybe we could all make some more music ....

well, i am an electrical engineer (got my degree from georgia tech) and i see a lot of b.s. regularly in the amps forum - main reason why i don't participate there that often. folks that have book knowledge (and often less than they think they do, at that) using that as a placebo for real experience, especially when it comes to fringy-type stuff like this (low-f# and lower note reproduction).

of course, again, generally these folks don't tend to have anything really relevant to show for themselves, musically - no sound samples or songs, or cds - for some of the folks i've seen, their actual ability to play bass is even questionable. that's cool - we cannot overlook the fact that, despite it's stated mandate, talkbass is a forum for -discussion- and as such, is going to be home to a lot of folks who have more to say than to play, so to speak.

all the folks with experience can do is share what they know, from their experience, and let it go at that. -shrug-. i know it's frustrating, but it's the nature of the beast.

I totally agree.

No not at all Ed. I know what I hear and I could care less about all that babble about you need such a massive this and that, etc.

Whats interesting to me is that I have yet to hear these experts make a proper rig of the kind that they speak of :)

Very nice thread! Outstanding Instruments! (and participants)

I hope I can join - -
- -but I have to confess those extra strings mostly stay muted in public.
I haven’t had an “ERB appropriate” gig for ages.
However, keeping the house plants healthy is more fun than ever!

Here are my usual suspects (left to right):
-93’ Pedulla MVP 6,
-07’ Pulcinella MPG 6,
-07’ Laggan “What if” 7
-08’ Ramirez “What I learned from the What-if bass” bass.

NOT (YET) PICTURED
Attempts at ERBs, circa 1978-80:
-Pedulla Buzz with Roland GR guts
-Custom lucite-bodied-short-scale-8/4 double-neck-stereophonical "basschestra"!

I have a string question:
Wilser started building me a 12ver (six dual-courses).
I want to make it as “warm mid-rangy” and “un-metallic” as possible.
I’ve asked for 33”scale, specifically wound dual-coil PUs, and 20mm saddle spacing (for fingers rather than a pick).

I ‘m thinking nickel-coated strings. I’m considering mostly smith burners .
(I can get a “lifer” discount for the Smiths at the local music store):
Lower Octave:
Set, Smith Burner Mediums - C.030– G.045 –D.065 – A.085 – E.105 – B.130
Higher Octave:
Set, Smith Burner Piccolo - - - - - - G.020– D.030 – A.040– E.050
Single Smith Burner - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - (sold as D) B.065 or .070
Single Conklin - (sold as A#) C Snakeskin 011, or Powerskin. .015

Any comments/suggestions are appreciated!

-07’ Laggan “What if” 7
-08’ Ramirez “What I learned from the What-if bass” bass.

I remember seeing the progress of the Laggan bass- what factors did you learn from it that you corrected with the Ramirez?

For the record; the issues where with ME, not the builder.
Russ Laggan did some nice work. The thin, wedged bodied is very cool, and the neck feels awesome.

I let the tail wag the dog in wanting full access to a 31 position f-board.
The limited benefit didn’t come close to the cost; odd PU positions and lack of sit-ability.

And while the Spalted Maple makes for cool photos, I now know super-exotic tops are just not me.
SO- -the answer to some of my “what ifs” was “you won't like it".
But the main lesson;
Communicate very clearly and verify every spec!
Due to my lack of the above mentioned, the string spacing and neck placement were different than I wanted.
As much as I've tried, I'm unable to feel "at home" on this bass .

Other than the communication issue, no regrets. I knew there were risks.

On the Ramirez 7:
Shorter fingerboard, standard woods, more convential PU placement, - -
Wilser can tell you how PAINFULLY detailed I get, and how often I communicate to "double-check" the specs. :smug:
