Pointbass you are putting my basses in some pretty classy company. Not sure I belong there but thanks.....Tom

PS some pretty basses on this thread!

Hmmm, let's see ......

Yup, definitely belong in that same classy company :D

Very nice work Tom, been following some of the recent builds and I'm loving your instruments ....

Okay, about strings .....

As anyone playing ERB's is well aware, strings are a bit of a hassle. Can't just stroll into GC/Sam Ash or your local Mom & Pop's Music and pick up a set of strings for a typical ERB, so it takes a little searching at first but there are sources. Some that I know of are:

www.conklinguitars.com go to accessories and you'll find the string sets and single strings

www.octave4plus.com a custom string company, rumor is that they'll soon be making string sets for 4 thru 12 string basses

Invalid Link Removed check the Power Steel sets for some options

Warwick has a .175 F#0 that can be found wherever they deal in the Dark Lord sub-contra bass.

Various ERB builders (BEE basses comes quickly to mind) may be able to source single strings for you. Other string companies like LaBella may have some custom options, too. Generally, since extended range players use a somewhat unorthodox series of tunings for the very low and very high range, as soon as you move out of the comfort zone of BEADGCF-type tunings you start to find options quite limited.

I personally use a LaBella six string flatwound set (760FM-CB-XL .029, .049, .069, .089, .109, .128) with a Conklin .018 plain steel for the F string on my 7. I recently switched my fretless 6 to a set of Conklin Power Steel PS5's with a Conklin .165 Power Steel for the F#0. My fretted 6 has the stock LaBella 760FM-CB-XL flats on it.

Hopefully others will chime in about string sets and how they're using them .....

edit: BTW, a real bargain in a 6 string set can be found at www.rondomusic.com where they sell a no-name called Indie strings - the flatwound 6 string long scale set is only $24.95 and is very usable ....

Count me in. I love the added versatility and the new worlds that my GTBD-7 allows me to explore. I have a 4 and 5 but hardly use them anymore because the 7 is so much fun to play. As for strings, I use the Conklin Snakeskins. I have been really happy with them. I tried the Dean Markley's (SR2000's I think they were); and was really disappointed. The DM's lost their life quickly.

Very nice looking basses. I have admired the Clemment basses for a while. Wish my income were greater as my wife might be more open to me getting one of these!

I'm in with the Cort Curbow fretted 6, which i rate very highly!

I have a Cort Curbow 5 that I upgraded the electronics on. I agree; decent basses for the money. It's a shame they seem to be so overlooked because there seems to be a lack of appreciation for the Cort name and the expertise in building guitars that accompanies it.

C#F#BEADGCFBbEbAb for strings 1-12 on a 12 string. I would guess a 13 string would add a high Db string?

For reference, the strings in bold are the ones on a four string. Not all 7, 8, 9 stringers will have a C# or F# string, some start with B, and there are probably a few that start with the standard E.

Of course, this assumes standard fourths tuning. People tune them different ways.

Thanks for the response, I guess my curiosity was if they were tuned in fourths from the factory. I guess some players can make use of all that range? I know I couldn't.;)

I met my wife on Friday the 13th poor lady. ;)

No I had somebody asking about an 9 and a 7 and both backed out. I am a bit wary of people asking for more than 6 now. They seem to lead you along for a long time then drop of the face of the earth. I am interested in doing it but will have to find the right customer........t

I bought my first 6er (the Roscoe) about 2 months ago and am hooked!

I am not a shredder by any stretch. I may be a bit of what I would call a "busy" bassist, but I am busier on a 4 than I am on a 6er for some reason!

Here are my 2 6ers... a Roscoe SKB-3006 and a MTD KZ6.

I've heard this is typical with a lot of custom instruments in general. Lots of kicking the tires, but not lighting of fires.
