Extended Range Bass (Club??) Thread

New (custom?) or used? I thought they stopped offering the claro walnut model a while back.

Used, won in an eBay auction last week. IIR, seller said it's a 2002. Here are some pics from the auction...

I wonder if a 6-string bass is still considered an ERB, considering that even Fender seems to be going there, and it's a standard off-the-shelf model for many brands from Ibanez to Modulus to Peavey to Schecter.

In any case, I get plenty of happy mileage out of my 9-string bee:

ready to build one. :D
hey Tom,
and how about a nine string fretless monster :D
your design is very interesting and with nine strings, I think it would be a great instrument. ;)

Hey Paulo,

You pretty much have my dream bass there. I hope to one day own a Jerzy Basic IX myself. :)

if you want, come and spend some vacations here in sunny Portugal in the summer and you can play the bass all you want :bassist:

Tom, in the 24 fret the total distance of the neck is 13,1 centimeters.

the others spacings are:

the scale length is 35.
the spacing in centimeters are:
at the nut 7,1 centimeters or 71 milimeters.
67milimeters of usable space between string to string (not center to center)
the string spacing at the bridge is 17,5 milimeters

I would like to apply for a membership number

I've had three 7str basses so far, but I've come to a realization that I'm in my "comfort zone" with my 5str and 6str basses

Usual "No pic, no bass" rule, applies here, so I oblige

That's my 6str bunch. I am sure I don't need to add the 5str bunch as well;)

We're a pretty diverse group :D

Extended range is all in the mind and approach, IMO. String count isn't the only factor ... for example, it'd be very difficult to say that one of Skip's 39" scale 4 string Knuckle basses or Jauqo's low C# basses wouldn't qualify as "extending" the range of the bass;)

Just looking at the "What kind of bass do you play" poll http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=426626 shows that 6 string basses represent about 11% +/- of the total of 4 string basses ... not an overwhelming % by any means, but a definite increase in recent years, to be sure. And 7 string basses are less than 1%, 8 strings below 0.005%. Beyond 8 strings, somebody with better math skills than me has to figure out the percentage (maybe 0.003%??) ...

I've always loved ERBs- within my first year of playing bass I was watching Bill Dickens and Anthony Jackson and really wanted one for myself. Now after 13 years of playing, my only bass is a six-string with six-string fretless to match it being built.

I remember asking Jauqo about that some years ago- my take on it was that it was not an extended range instrument, as the range was the same as a standard four-string- only the tuning was different. Range has always been to me the number of available octaves/note tones at your disposal. Many fours still qualify though- the Hyperbass for example has a greater range than many six-strings. Even retuning a four-string up in 5ths to be E, B, F#, C# would make it an extended range instrument (although difficult to play :D).

I thought you didn't like clubs? :D
