Extended Range Bass (Club??) Thread

Yes. He sold it to Taiwright, here on TB. I bought it from Tai. It was for sale 6 months before I bought it. Seems a little odd, it was for sale so long. As soon as I saw it, I snatched it.
I remember that it was hanging around for a while ... congrats on the purchase! But actually, it's not that surprising that it took a while to sell it .... aside from the lunatics posting in this thread, not all that many people are interested in a 9 :ninja:

I wouldn't imagine that there are more than a couple of dozen 9 strings that have ever been built ... I can only come up with about 10 or so that I know of, but of course I'm old and feeble-minded ....

That is a really sweet looking bass, how do you have it tuned?

I'd check with Fred himself, he might be able to recommend someone OR do it for you....not sure if he's into that kinda thing or not.

I have known Pedulla to epoxy some non-pedulla basses with thier "diamond coat", but if they agree be prepared to shell out a bunch of $$$$. A friend of mine got them to epoxy the neck on his Fodera 4 fretless a few years ago, but I know it cost him almost $1000 with shipping costs.

Can anyone recommend someone who could epoxy the neck ? HG Thor does not want to attempt removing the custom nut.

custom nut? pics? :)

i'm pretty sure bill conklin has actually done quite a few by now - undoubtedly more than a couple dozen. that is speculation on my part, however, based on how i know his business is doing, and potentially inaccurate.

the number of 9's in existence is probably in the coule hundreds range, at least. still not a lot, but more than, say, the number of doubleneck 7 strings :D. :hyper:

That's a lot more than I would have thought, but as previously stated ... "old and feeble-minded". But in reality, even if the actual is 300 basses, that's nearly inconsequential compared to 4's & 5's .... Rondo probably sells 300 4 strings a month ....

As far as double-neck 7's are concerned, no one would ever be crazy enough to try one of those ... :hiding:

A very enjoyable thread, Pointbass; quite civilized, too. My meager offering consists of an econo Korean 6 string bass that I recently defretted. The string spacing is very tight (~15mm), so it is easy to fly around on. I'm quite happy with the results but I reckon a poly finish for the finger board is in order in the near future.

ooo, yeah, that's a nice touch.

a wood nut, though, seems unwise to me. despite how nice it looks, might want to replace it anyway - bone or brass or something less likely to break over time. i don't know, might not be an issue.

I'm pretty positive that board is all Acrylized. If that's the case, the stuff will hold up better than bone or corian, etc.

IMO/E the epoxy treatment of the Acrylized wood is a waste. Simply use tripoli to buff the board to a high gloss and it should have similar tone & feel

I dont have a clue where to buy any strings for this thing
Try [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]. These are SIT strings, but Conklin sells gauges from .195 all the way up to .007 to fit long-scale basses. Also Snakeskin strings, which includes the low F# but not the high D# if you tune it that way. (I tune mine B-E-A-D-G-C-F-A#-D#).

Anthbass & Stickk #'s 059 & 060 ...

Thanks, but it has very little to do with me .... Mr. Turner indirectly implanted the seed in my head, as well as having a great deal to do with maintaining civility ... ;) I'm basically the "number-giver-outer" ....

But it has been nice to be able to chat some in a thread without the usual pot-shots being taken. It would also be nice to delve into some other ERB-unique issues like pick-ups, bridges, etc ..... as a fairly recent ERB convert (just a little over 4 years since my first 6) I know I've had many problems locating bridges besides Hipshot stuff, and I'm woefully inept with sourcing out electronics. I would guess that others have similar issues, and we ERB guys don't generally get too much in assistance from the other forums here ....

I'm building an 8-string fretless (as in octaves, not 8 individual strings) that's equivalent to 26 frets. Does that get me a number?

If you've got the b*lls to play a long neck octave fretless you don't need to ask permission to get a number :D

Post some pics as you progress ...

Yeah, that's a pretty good idea! I'm curious what kind of pickups everyone else is using. Which manufacturer does 6+ PU on a regular basis? Maybe a bit more insight what seperates ERB-PU from regular PU (not only the size)...

I'll start with mine :)
Manufactered by me (just like the bass :smug: ), singlecoils with neodymium magnets, 8,4KOhm and 7500 turns on the neck. They're clear and transparent as hell with some serious growl. The output is not as much as I would like , so there are some things that will be improved in the future.
