Extended Range Bass (Club??) Thread

I wish I could devote 24 hrs a day, really studying every aspect of this bass. All the possible chords and such. Its really not that hard to play.

That's exactly what I keep telling people. As soon as you start to play these big ERB's, they make sense. :D

I agree .... and I used to tell people the same thing all of the time, but the reality is that you need to have an open mind when you first start to play. Too many guys have a tendency to just think of these basses as a "regular" bass with a few extra notes on either end. In doing so, they severely limit the multitude of options we have.

What really surprised me when I got my first 6 string was how much of a difference there was in approach as compared to a 5. Then with a 7 and eventually an 8 the options just seem limitless. I've not had the pleasure of a 9 string, but I can see how the options pattern would unfold ... :)

So that's mostly what I tell people now, it's really more of a mindset change in your approach to playing than it is adjusting to the increased string count. Frankly, trying to do all I do now only using a 4 string is amazingly difficult for me .... guess I'm getting lazy in my advancing years .... ;)

So, this is it? No more of you lurking in the shadows

I've been lurking. Currently I'm playing a typical B E A D G C 6-string as my main bass, which doesn't fit my personal definition of "ERB" (even though I see it qualifies for this thread's more inclusive definition.)

But I have a Knuckle Quake 6-string on the way, in the latter stages of the build now. It will be tuned F# B E A D G. I'm a lot more interested in exploring the "subcontrabass" side of the ERB thing rather than adding higher strings -- although I know a lot of players do great things with that high range, it just isn't where my personal interest lies. But I spend so much time on the low B string that it makes a lot of sense for me to add a low F#.

The Rob Allen 6er came last week and has rocked my socks off!!

Haven't had time to take a good picture yet, but here's what I got.

edbutler3 #059 ....

I agree on the low end of things, for sure .... didn't really ever think that much about the F# until I started using it, now I have a hard time without it. But the high side is equally important to me up to the F, anything higher and I'm floundering ..... ;)

Would there happen to be a you tube clip of Mr. Turner soling on that 7 string doubleneck ? Thats the coolest bass.

Slaping up high on the fretted, and getting down with a pic on the fretless. Oh, I can just imagine how much fun that is.

heh. no pics on either neck for me. the fretless neck actually ends up sounding awesome slapped, too, although i don't slap on it for any of the songs i use it on.

we do have a youtube with clips of me playing it, but it was just used for visuals - don't actually play it in the song in the youtube.

i play my 7 string fretless that was the pattern bass i used for the lower neck of the doubleneck.
