Extended Range Bass (Club??) Thread

I am free to answer any questions someone may have before buying an AntonioTsai 7 string, but don't get caught up in the negativity of his hollow-bodies and get one of his basses....

There are several guys here at TB that own or have owned Antoniotsai basses and generally the reviews have been positive .... that fretless is very pretty ...

Damn I want an ERB fretless so bad after seeing some of the beauties you guys have

So is it possible to find flatwounds that have thicker gauge than .135/.140, I mean those that go lower than B?
If not, what strings are you guys using for that (I assume Conklins or something custom) and how is the fingerboard putting up with them?

There is some rumbling that www.octave4plus.com will be making flatwound sets & singles available for the lower tunings soon .....

I recently put the Conklins on my 6 and the fingerboard is holding up fine so far ....

Yep, I've been checking out Octave4 for some time now, for both flats and maybe a .700 string, who knows?

What gauges are on your 6? I presume the fingerboard is ebony?

I'm using the Power Steels .035, .055, .080, .110, .135, .165

The fingerboard is ebony, it shows some very minor distress from the rounds vs the flats, but it's not significant. I get the board redressed every few years or so, depending on wear ...

I'd much rather flats, but not so much because of wear & tear. I just prefer the tone and feel of flats more ...

Power Steels here too, though I think I'll be going for a fretless that could have as many strings as possible (I think 14 should do it) and thought about stringing it with 5 or 6 flats set + George Benson guitar flats - the only thing I can't find flats for is the low C# and F#, and though they're pretty thick, they can't do the overall damage on the board.

So what do you guys think -

.195 C#
.165 F#
.132 B
.100 E
.080 A
.065 D
.055 G
.041 B
.031 E
.021 A
.018 D
.014 G
.011 B
.008 E

Or maybe all fourths, not sure. Multi-scale 36"-30something", no pups, just piezos with the board going all the way to the end of the body (think Ritter Roya).

Am I crazy or just delusional? :D

your gauges fron the .065 d on up are way outta whack. having those stings that high a tension, with the low tension on the others, would not be advised.

i would suggest no bigger than a .055 d, a .04 to - .03 g, and the subseuquent b and e being about .028 and .022, or thereabouts.

oh, and i've always used the same rounds on my fretteds as i do on my fretlesses (i play fretted and fretless about 50/50). haven't had a problem in a long time. got my first fretless 7 (that i got in 93) refin'ed about 10 years ago after 5 years of very heavy playing - wasn't urethane on the board, was something else and didn't last. bill tried a urethane on there, and all my subsequent fretless basses, and haven't had any problems since.

Well I just copied the gauges of the G.B. strings, doesn't really have to be that exact gauge, but I thing what you've suggested is more fitting. Thanks :)

So what gauges should I use if I want to go higher than high E and how 'thin' could I go on a, let's say 32" scale?

Does anyone know what gauges and tuning Yves Carbonne uses on his 12 string fretless? Does he log onto TB?

Excellent, I guess that means I'm not flatwound dependent, though I would really like to have that tone across the range of the instrument, but then maybe I could do a little experimenting :D

Thanks again :)

so, is this all the erb players we have? :hyper:

Sup John,

I bet theres a hell of allot more ERB players here on talk bass, but looks like their just not chiming in...... :hmm: i guess some people like to read the threads and bail.
