extra cab ohms question

i have a mark bass little mark II combo amp which is 300W@8ohms and 500W@4ohms. the 12 speaker in the combo is 8 ohm. are there any sugestions for an extra speaker. also how do i approach this. if i plug another 8ohm cabinet that would mean that the total resistance is 16ohms correct? the manual doesnt say anything about how much power it delivers at 16ohms.

That combo is designed to add another 8ohm speaker, which will result in parallel connection, and hence the optimal 4ohm load. This is a cool thing, since you will not only increase the power delivery from the amp, but also increase the sound pressure with the additional speakers, and benefit from speaker coupling (two stacked speakers working together). It will be quite and increase in output and low end, and will allow you to still use the small combo for smaller gigs and then add the extra speaker for larger ones.

The simplest thing to do would be to purchase the same MB cab/speaker that lines up with the combo, the small 112 8ohm cab IMO. That way, you won't have any surprises when trying to match a different speaker design to your current combo (different SPL, etc.). As long as the extra speaker is 8ohm, you can't really to any 'harm', but the easiest bet is to add the same or similar speaker IMO and IME.

thanks for the replies. that helps a lot. it doesnt say anything about series or parellel on the amp or in the manual. it only says "class 2 wiring" on the back of the amp near the second speaker jack. i could assume that if there are two speaker jacks they would be parallel but i just wanted to be careful. thanks again

i know it makes sense to use any 8 ohm extra cabinet but it seems like if i used a 4x10 as the extra cab the amp wouldnt be able to handle it. would it be advised not to use that set up? (mark bass little mark II combo, plus a 4x10 cab, both at 8 ohm) it adds up, no?

The 4x10 as an extension cabinet will give you a lot of extra speaker area and a good increase in useable volume. It should be able to handle anything the Markbass can give it. Don't worry about "underpowering" it. That's myth that keeps perpetuating itself and is spread by people who heard it from someone else who didn't know what they were talking about. That's just in case you were concerened about "underpowering" the 4x10. :) If you aren't, ignore what I said.
