Extra string retainer on A string?

Is there anyone here who does this? Is this even necessary?

Given the number of basses out there without one which seem to be ok, my own included, I'd say it's entirely, completely, 100% unnecessary.

I'd also say the retaining bar is a much more aesthetically pleasing solution for anyone considering it.

I prefer a properly designed headstock that does not need such things

Fender only puts those Arm Bar/ stealth retainers on the American Deluxe and the New American Dimension basses. I've told the Rep in my area, for what that is worth, Fender could sell a bunch of those things if they would market them, but to no avail. I'm trying to get one of my metal working buddies to make me up a few. If it happens, I'll try to remember to let you know.

They are made by Hipshot, but they do not sell them to the public.
You can buy them on eBay from the stratsphere.
I got one for the B string on my P5 and one for the A string on my Jazz.

Squier also puts a four string bar (GDAE) on their 5 string Affinity Jazz. I always put a 3 string Hipshot retainer (DAE) on my Warmoth builds...

I like the Hipshot easy load open top better than the straight bar.

That looks silly. You can buy proper 3 string retainers, or use a bar retainer. Whether or not they are necessary depends on the setup of the bass. It is arguable that a string retainer on the A string is not necessary with a well-cut nut.

You have to buy a set of tuners for a American Deluxe that came from the factory with it. I waited for them to have a sale and bought the set, removed the Strong arm and replaced it with the flat washer from my bass and resold the new set of tuners.
I got $10 less for one set and $15 less for the other set.
$25 for two arms, smokin deal!

Fender will not sell them and will not let Hipshot sell them.
I tried to get them from both sources with no luck.
So, instead of whining about it I figured out a way to buy two of them. Heck, I saved a lot of money doing it my way too. If they did sell them, what would they charge? $50?
