Not sure "social media" in general is the problem (technically, TB is social media), but FB/Instagram are particularly bad for most of these.

I'm going to disagree on cancel culture, though, that's been around for ages. I remember having to cross a picket line to go see The Last Temptation of Christ in the late 80s. Buncha zealots who either hadn't seen or didn't understand that movie trying to get the theater to stop showing it. Wasn't new then, isn't new now.

This is exactly the question I had after reading Amy Webb's The Big Nine. And that was before things got notably worse. Pessimistically, one could look at it as a race to the bottom; optimistically (well, almost!) that big corps, these days, are more likely than gov'ts to deal with the actual statistical data rather than try to spin those numbers and make us all look crazier than, in fact, we are. Social responsibility because consumers might just care! Sad to say, but still...

This online world we inhabit is extremely fragile. I was thinking how in the 80s I navigated my way around western Europe driving all on my own with nothing more than a printed road atlas and foreign (to me) language road signs for guidance, no SatNav, no mobile phone. Can people even do that these days?

It is indeed fragile, in a number of ways. Online friendships are often fraught with misunderstanding, though I've made some lasting ones online, as well. And I've had real life friendships turn out to be just as fragile, so there's that. I guess humans will human, or something like that.

I don't know that people in this day and age could navigate easily with roadmaps like we did back in the day. I have no desire to go back there, but could if I had to.
