Fake Fender Decal?

Is this the real deal? The reason I ask is because of how crammed the logo is. I feel like the "bass" part is about to fall off the head stock. I checked the serial and it seems to be made in the Ensenada factory in the late 90's.

That is a mid 90's mexican label, I 100% assure you. Although the reason I'd suspect fake is that I've never seen the label placed so poorly, you cannot even see the made in mexico.

E-mail Fender the S/N, see if everything matches up, if the colour comes back different or something strange.

I am not an expert either, The Fender Decal look wrong. Mexi Fenders do use the black plastic insert in the truss rod adjustment, at the top of the neck, not at the heel. So that part looks OK. Why would someone fake a mexi-Fender? I suspect someone was just trying to dress up the headstock decal and didn't do a very good job. S/N indicates a 98 model, perhaps the original decal got boogered up over the years. If it plays good who cares? If the decal bothers you , replace it. It might be a fun project!

It looks like someone just replaced the logo with an older 50's style. Those are proper Fender MIM tuners and the serial number on the back looks right. If you look where the Fender logo should have been on a bass of that era, it looks lighter there to me, like it was sanded. It appears to me that the original logo was sanded off, and a vintage waterslide was applied and then clear coated.

It's a real Fender, just not a 50's RI. I would get another waterslide of your choice, or call Fender and try to get a proper era one, and replace the poorly done job.

That's not a 90s MIM logo. Looks more like an early '60s repro. That may have been a MIM Fender Squier Series originally. The MIM Standards that year had the serial # under "Fender" on front of headstock, not the back, like this.

"Precision Bass" is next to, not under "Fender", and the font is more modern.

The front of that headstock looks like it has been stripped and refinished, too.

Here's some examples of early Fender Precision logos.

The "Fender" part of the MIM logo looks more like the late 60s, with larger letters that are all connected. The one in question here has thinner letters with the "d" separate from the surrounding letters, like the earlier examples.

My point was that the decal in question on the headstock in question did not look right, therefore wrong decal on this headstock. If Fender Mexico ever used a 60's decal on this type of headstock, I've never seen one before. Then again, I'm no expert...

I think this is the correct explaination... someone tried to make a MIM Squier look like a MIM Fender...
