Yes, that bass can only play fake jazz. Out of the Fake Book.
The OP hasn't said, but I'm guessing the seller is playing dumb and letting the imagination of the buyer govern the deal. I would bet the seller hasn't indicated the bass is anything other than a red guitar her husband / son / boyfriend owned. Sorry OP - no vintage Fenders on CL EVER for cheap money. Maybe once upon a time and at pawnshops too. But face it - if someone can post a decent CL ad, they can google 'Fender Bass Value' and become acquainted with the market in a couple of hours. I got screwed once on a BC Rich guitar copy. Seller made no promises and my own greed kicked my ass.
Wrong headstock shape, wrong string guide, string guide in wrong position...
Several signs are pointing towards a rebadged FSO (Fender shaped object). The headstock contours are slightly off, import tuners, two forward screws on the bridge, truss rod access at the headstock without the bullet , Johnson badged pups.

My recently built DIY/KIT P-bass copy would fool a novice, but all the signs are there to tip off anyone who really KNOWS what a 70's P-bass is/looks like/feels like- mine ain't it! That's for sure.
But it plays like a dream, SOUNDS like all teh GOOD qualities in a well-built P-bass and cost me a lot less.

I'm not 100% certain but I think fender sill put the "ashtray" cover over the bridge through the 70's. most players took them off but then there were two pretty noticeable screw holes. can you enlarge your picture enough to see if those screw holes are there in the bridge area?
Yup. Would have ashtrays with the F on the bridge cover. Also, bullet truss rod, binding on the neck, block inlays, and for most of the 70's would be 3 bolt micro-tilt neck plate.
Edit to add: IMO the most ornate and beautiful basses Fender ever made.
This. Exactly! Why reward a con artist? Something like this does NOT happen by accident! This is the work of a crook. Period.
The list of what proves this is not a Fender Jazz Bass is too long to go into. Even the tuners are wrong. Many good replies here so far. I agree that someone is trying to pull a fast one. Don't be duped by this.
What, she's asking $250 and you offered $300, sounds like you should buy it not asking people if they think it's real or not. At $250 with the pickups and the neck, I would say that this is very not real. But who knows, it might be a very nice bass to own...
