Famous musicians you've ALMOST met

The biggest one must be Paul Simon, in our hometown. One of the performers in the show who studied with with my wife would get us in and backstage. Then this 20-year old nobody decided to go act really important with her headset and all, and we couldn't reach our performer friend to come down and vouch for us. Well whatever. Went to the nearest bar instead and had a drink.

This. I have never understood celebrity watching. They may be famous for some reason or another, but really, they are no different than you or I. Most of them prefer to be left alone and allowed to live their lives.

Attended a Who show in Toronto in the early 80's, Face Dances tour. It was an all day even with Heart and J Giels (sp) opening.
By the end of the night, I was totally spent... hot humid day and equally humid that evening... so after the concert, I found myself sitting on the curb, drenched in sweat, but fully happy with seeing my bass idol.
While sitting, waiting for a street car to take me back to my buddy's place to crash for the night, I notice that there are two limo's sitting at the red light, right in front of me... the window rolls down and it's The Ox sitting in the back seat... I was stunned... I gave him the thumbs up and he just smiled as the limo drove away!

I called in to a radio show once and talked bass with Duff McKagan for a minute. He invited me down to the arena to meet him before the GNR show the following night. He supposedly wrote down my name and said he would be expecting me. When I got there, I was treated like crap by the GNR crew and told Axl wouldn't allow anyone in. Needless to say, Axl sliced his hand wide open on a mic stand about 2 songs into the set and they had to cut the night short.Unfortunately, I never got to meet Duff but karma was good to me that night.

One time I was on a flight (pre 9-11) and had to use the bathroom. I walked up to the front of the plane and Tom Morello from Rage Against the Machine was sitting there. He noticed the "deer in headlights" look on my face and gave me a smile and nod. He did the same thing for my wife.
Another time I got onto a hotel evevator in Memphis, TN and Vinnie from Pantera got on with another guy. I didn't say anything to him because it was 7am and he looked even more hungover than me. :)

I went to see Avenged Sevenfold with Black Veil Brides and a couple bands that sucked not long ago. One of the bassists that I'm friends with locally knew Ashley Purdey or however you spell his name, the bassist from BVB. He was gonna get us back stage to meet them and I was hoping to meet A7X. Theyre in my top 5 favorite bands and one of the biggest influences on me recently. Black Veil Brides would have been awesome too.

My friend was setting up the meeting when Ashley told him they had ti split because they had another gig the next day and their manager told them they had to get back to the hotel

Well, a few years back I watched Christian McBride at a local jam (it was a music festival). After the jam he was just standing there and talking, I walked past him fully aware (honestly It was because i just started listening to jazz and had no idea who he really was)
Yup. That kinda sucked.

Nowadays I make full use of every single opportunity and have had the chance to meet Frank Gambale, Stu Hamm, Joel Taylor, the Ari Hoenig Quartet, Poncho Sanchez, Francisco Torres, Joe Bonamassa, Alex Hutchings, Makoto Ozone, and most recently....

EARTH, WIND AND FIRE, BABY!! Well, not all of them, but Verdine White, Philip Bailey and Ralph Johnson. Even got a picture with them and had Verdine sign my Fender Marcus Miller. Cool guy. He talked about how he really liked my bass and asked me which year/build it was. I asked him if he wanted to play it but I figured he was in a rush. Let me know if you guys wanna see pictures!

Almost met William Duvall awhile back when AIC was opening for Velvet Revolver. I saw him from a chain linked fence when he was walking from the stage to his tour bus. I shouted and he looked over and smiled and waved, but he didn't come over to say hi.

Was mired in an endless rehearsal with an anal retentive drummer and a passive bandleader and just missed Richard Bona driving the other way from Vic's Bass and Nature Camp.
Moral: Be a jerk next time and leave! It didn't matter in the long run that we over-rehearsed.

I was invited on-stage at a Cake concert on Halloween 2001 at the Pageant in St. Louis. I was dressed as the Devil and got to help sing on "Jolene." I shook hands with John McRea (singer) and Vince DiFiore (trumpet/keyboards). It was frickin' awesome!

My wife met the guys from MudVayne and Taxi War Dance at a party when they were still playing in Peoria. (probably circa 1998-99)

Last month Ziggy Marley, Feist, and Dick Dale all came to Asheville, NC. which is pretty close to me, all in the same week at a couple of pretty laidback, smallish venues. I'm a fan of all of them, especially Ziggy. Last year I met Mike Gordon of Phish at the venue Ziggy and Feist played.

I'm a college student and it was finals week, so I couldn't go. :(
