Gene Simmons played both fingerstyle & with a pick...heck even Flea plays some with a pick now-a-days...

I was gonna throw a few more names out there, but then I realized: what's the point? The OP wanted to know if it was OK to play with a pick, and of course it is. It doesn't do any of us any good to divide bassists into categories of pick players and fingers players because all that does is perpetuate the pointless debate.
Play however you're more comfortable, it doesn't amount to a hill of beans anyway. This thread could go on forever if it's gonna list every good bassist who ever struck his string with a plectrum just as it could if it was a list of every good bassist who ever made sounds without one.

joe principe. hes not known for being a notable bassist, but he would be nothing without a pick. he personifies punk bass. both his work with 88 fingers louie and rise against is amazing.
you can actually hear him in the mix? ive heard a collective 15 seconds of actually bass in listening to slipknot.
i hear him a lot more on reggie and the full effect recordings, and theres not a lot of bass there either
If you boost the bass on your speakers you can usually hear him... ive never had a problem, Confessions from their first cd mate feed kill repeat is a good example of his playing
Isn't Carlos Vega a drummer who most famously played with James Taylor years ago???
