Carole Kaye is a great pick bassist and the most famous studio bass player from the 60's and early 70's, but to my ear you can't beat the sound of Joe Osborne. Some of it had to do with the large pick he used with the 1960 Fender "stack-knob" Jazz Bass. Somehow this resulted in a distinct but smooth attack and a natural, full range tone. His bass lines were usually interesting and he wrote or personalized many of them even though he was a studio musician and often worked from charts.
