Fancy vs Simple guitars...is their a difference?

Okay, here's what's goin' on. All most EVERY time I log onto TB forums I go straight to the Basses section (as do about 60% of the rest of us). One thing I like to do is to look at everyones new and expensive basses. I recently went into the reviews section and saw a 10 string bass and about 50 other crazy shaped Alembics. :hmm: I thought to myself, Why can't everyone just own a jazz bass? I just got my newest Bass Player magazine and read a rant from a 71-year old about an advertisement that showed a bassist playing a 6 string. To sum it up, he said that a 6 string bass is a guitar, not a bass. Sadly, I have agree with him! I mean, I do understand that some people want extra strings to fit they're style of music, but 10 strings? :rollno: That's just not necessary. And to add to this, what's up with the exotic woods? Some may say that bubinga or walnut or whatever are "better than normal woods". I'd have to disagree. Why do we need to buy an exotic-wood guitar to have a slight tone change and a cooler look? Plus, they're waaaaay too expensive. But that's just my two-cents. Some like to play unusual new things, but I think I'll stick to the classics. :bassist:

P.S. If I came off sounding angry, I'm not! Please understand that this is simply constructive criticism :)

I understand what your saying. Quite a few people here agree with you I'm sure, I'm not one of them. At the same time, opinions are like... well, you know the rest. If your happy with a plain jane Fender cool. Some people just want to spice things up and expand the possibilities is all.

it is a little sad. I agree 6 probably too out there, 5 is understandable, but ive never herd of 10 thats too much. I guess most of it has to do with show, and the persons idea of style. Maybe its like when you were a kid and you saw a toy and it had to be yours. A 10 string bass, in my mind fills no realistic role and is un-nessisary. Blame the swedish they started this nonsense =D. No offense to there crazy style of metal, its all good.

Thanks for being cool, man. Alot of people on here are real jerks.

Hehe, that reminds me of the time I asked my guitar playing friend if he ever dreamed of being on a stage in front of hundreds of people chanting his name and he said to me - "No, I dream of sweep picking in a melodic death metal band in Finland."

:eyebrow:

Foolish child.

I see nothing wrong with using fancy (n+1)-string exotic wood basses. If someone likes it, then I see no reason why he shouldn't use them.

You know, in Poland we have a saying which goes somewhat like this:
"taste is like ass - everyone has its own"

And besides, if everyone would like the same things, life would be soooo boring. ;)

I didn't mean that everyone should like the same thing! *Facepalm* I meant that people should just keep it simple.

Even if everyone had a jazz bass, I still wouldn't be sick of them! :D

Of course you're entitled to your opinion. But, to assume everyone should share that view is both unrealistic, and short-sighted. Variety in life is what makes it all interesting. And, if you were happy with what you have, you wouldn't critisize what you don't have. Simple.

I love seeing new stuff with exotic woods, shapes, and ERB's - some of it is creative genus. I think most of them are works of art, and more power to the guys that can play them.
Jerzy makes one that is totally awesome looking.

Also if you think 10 is a bit much - the boys in Tennessee make a 15 string bass. :D
