Okay, here's what's goin' on. All most EVERY time I log onto TB forums I go straight to the Basses section (as do about 60% of the rest of us). One thing I like to do is to look at everyones new and expensive basses. I recently went into the reviews section and saw a 10 string bass and about 50 other crazy shaped Alembics.
I thought to myself, Why can't everyone just own a jazz bass? I just got my newest Bass Player magazine and read a rant from a 71-year old about an advertisement that showed a bassist playing a 6 string. To sum it up, he said that a 6 string bass is a guitar, not a bass. Sadly, I have agree with him! I mean, I do understand that some people want extra strings to fit they're style of music, but 10 strings?
That's just not necessary. And to add to this, what's up with the exotic woods? Some may say that bubinga or walnut or whatever are "better than normal woods". I'd have to disagree. Why do we need to buy an exotic-wood guitar to have a slight tone change and a cooler look? Plus, they're waaaaay too expensive. But that's just my two-cents. Some like to play unusual new things, but I think I'll stick to the classics.
P.S. If I came off sounding angry, I'm not! Please understand that this is simply constructive criticism
