Fancy vs Simple guitars...is their a difference?

Well, this might be because your thread comes across as pretty damn condescending. Why do you feel the need to dictate to people what they should play or should like? Just let them play what they want, no matter how many strings or fancy wood laminates it has.

If you're gonna yell at me, at least yell at the others that agree with me!!! Lol :D

I officially wash my hands of this topic...

Well i will probably get flammed for some of what i write so be it internet **** talking is sad , and this is just my opinion so no attempts at changing it will prove some integrity.

Being 19 most would figure me to be using something more recent in design or effects yada.

Electric Bass to me is a four string wooden instrument. When i open a thread that even shows modding to a five string i dont even want to read it 4 strings are a bass to me. never played active basses or been a snob. I play everyday and have for six years my first bass a dean lasted me 3 years now i play a modded fender percision. Of course someday i hope to own an HH stingray and yes i know there actives. I dont really use efffects and i think all these strings and fancy woods are blah,

guess what???? thats my opinion and everyone has there own, and if it makes you happy to play a 10 string go for it, and if you wanna drop 3,000$ on a bass have at it , its better than buying meth:smug:

+1

i feel so unliked :crying:

Well, you did just rant about how stupid a good chunk of the forum's basses are. You're not going to get too warm a welcome with something like this.

Also, how is this "constructive criticism"? Like, at all? putting down other people's instruments because you don't understand them? X number of strings aren't "necessary"?

You, sir, need to adjust your attitude, or you won't last too long on here. Your OP was nothing more than inflamatory/trollish. No productive discussion can come of this topic. All it is and all it can become is a hate thread, which is blatantly against the #1 rule on this forum.

Go read the stickies, and welcome to TB.

EDIT: Just to be clear, you're perfectly entitled to your opinion, but that doesn't give you the right to start a thread about how stupid other people's opinions/tastes are. If you're in a thread with basses you don't care for, skip right over that "post reply" button, or if you just HAVE to make other people read what you think, say that it's not your cup of tea, leave it at that, and move on.

i've about had it with the insults and the snide b.s. about extended range instruments and the musicians who choose to play them. i've dealt with it since 1993, and i've dealt with it here from some poor unfortunate ignoramouses ever since i first got here over 7 years ago. most folks ask honest questions about instruments they don't understand or never experienced, and that's fine, any number of the extended range players on the site here will be glad to share their experiences and answer questions.

but the (thankfully small) gaggle of clucking airheads who feel the need to be insulting about someone else's instrument choice need to adjust their cluck. it's disrespectful and flies right in the face of the #1 rule here at talkbass. we want this site to be a comfortable area for all bassists, and these kinds of comments make that impossible.

so the next time you think you have something funny to say about someone's instrument choice at their expense (nevermind the fact that we extended range bassists have heard it _all_ before, from folks smarter than you even, and they still sounded like idiots) think twice. it very well could cost you the priveledge of posting here.

Just pointing out the rules before anybody happens to do something not allowed round here.

For many -maybe- even most- people, a "plain jane" 4 or 5 string is probably sufficient. These are what I would call your "traditional" bass players. These are the guys you see holding down the bottom end at you favorite local bar.

Bass is also one of the few instruments where the production of the instrument has become a work of art in itself. That is where the fancy woods, unusual body styles, etc., come in. Sure, that beautiful piece of wood isn't necessary, but it does promote the non-musical art form of bass luthiery.

As for basses with more than 6 strings, well, you just have to listen to what those guys are doing with those instruments. Jean Baudin, StewMc, Bill Dickens, etc. You simply can't do what these guys are doing on a four or a five string Jazz bass. I'm not sure what they are doing qualifies as "playing bass" in the way that I think of it, but its hard to deny the art form. We don't have a different name for these extended-range instruments, so we just refer to them as basses. Sometimes I think this is an unfortunate insult in both directions.

Chaazums, since you are new to posting, you might take the time to read the rules. I can think of one mod in particular that might not let this head very far down the wrong path.

IBTL.

Oh A little apology to them might be nice, too.

Especially to the one who owns this.

i agree with your point. to a degree

first of all i could never see myself playin a boutique bass for the simple matter of

1. i limit myself to about 2k
2. i love wooden quilt flamed filled tops but im a clumsy fkr and i just couldnt justify my 5k fodera with a 5 cm gash down the side..

ill admit i play jazz's and put them throu alot of abuse.. have a cij 75 ri which is nearly more reliced then the relic brett made me ffs... in the end of the day they are my work horses, and tbh ive never seen a Relic'd Fodera, alembic, jerzy...

the most boutique (to me) bass i had was a SS2 and i treated that like a newborn.. but i just didnt feel great rocking it out on stage...

as for extended ranges... i put it this way

i race bikes as a hobby.. super sports 600

they scare the fk out of me..

i will never master them, in 2 years i plan on taking on the isle of mann tt (search it)
i set myself goals.. i achieve..

extended range bassists are the same.. guys that have basically mastered 4 to themselves and feel the need to expand

for that i admire them.. the thought of 6.7.8.9 etc strings scare's me.. the guys that play then are Masters... only to be admired and not jeered

the thing that SCARES me about extended range basses and i speak of a certain mister turners collection ...

how much does that made spend on strings :D

on a side note id love a jerzy, a CB, a CT and vigier but for now ill only admire those that have and play them

The music shop up the street has one of Carl Radle's Alembics and it's def. got some road wear. Not bad, but you can tell it's been played. I'll sneak up tomorrow and see if I can convince them to take it out of the case and let me snap some pics if you guys want.

Here's my measley .02. I've got a foot on both sides of the line. I do own a six-string bass, which in my opinion is about as far as necessary goes- the high C string enables you to do some interesting chordal work. I personally don't see the point in anything more than a six-string bass. But that's just my own personal opinion. I'm sure not many people were accepting of Anthony Jackson's quest for a six-string bass guitar way back in the day, but now they're pretty common. If you've been GASing after a seven-string or higher bass, by all means, get it (if you can afford it!) and rock the hell out of it! The way I see it, musical instruments aren't supposed to be one way or the other; they change and evolve. So there's my miniature rant.
