Fanned 7, scale lengths vs. strings.......

I'm looking at starting CB fanned 7. I'd like to start the fan at 37"-34", but it's a little challenging finding a long enough B and the rest of the strings.

Any suggestions for strings?

Would it be easier to go for 36"-33" to find strings?

37" strings that fit are the Dingwall strings. You may visit the dingwall forum for alternative strings on the 37" that fit

Thanks. That seems to be a good place to start. It looks like D'Addario has a decent selection of C and F strings, too.

Hmmmmm, I'm having trouble finding a complete set for a 7. If anyone else were in the same scenario, would you simply go for a 36" for the low B or go for the gusto?

I'd go the gusto. And I'd go so far as to try a 33" on the shorter side, personally.

Maybe try SIT? they do a lotta unique strings.

I'm finding a lot of stuff that works well on 36" scale. I find some stuff that would be great on a 37", but finding the C and F is such a royal pain.

SIT is looking like a decent option and I'd have some flexibility with choosing different gauges.

To clarify, I was thinking I'd string it (low to high) B (or dropped A)EADGCF.

On my 6 string Dingwall, I use SIT strings and they fit perfect.

36" on the bottom will let you go anywhere for strings. Extra long scale strings from nearly every string maker are 38" from the ball end (except DR if memory serves) and will be the easiest way for you to assemble custom sets. You might find drop A a challenge.

Sheldon's solution for B on his 37" is good and I'm sure he'd be happy to sell you sets. He may sell singles but I can't be certain of that.

Cliff is well known to TB for making a nice sounding B in 32" scale, so I'd think A in 36" wouldn't be too much of a problem for him.

Sheldon was telling me that I could purchase a 5 string set, but that still left me out in the open with the C and F.

So far, D'Addario seems to offer a good selection of strings with normal and taper cores and various gauges I could use. SIT looks pretty good, but D'Addario seems to have a little more selection.

Cliff Bordwell. The funny thing is I wanted to order this from him last year, then Peavey dropped the ball on a fretless from the custom shop. I think they wanted like $5k after getting a bunch wrong with my last Peavey. So I asked Cliff how much he'd charge, so I ordered a fretless 4 that was essentially a mix of a Peavey Cirrus and Pedulla Buzz. I ordered that first and plan on ordering the 7 as soon as I get my 4.....and figure out which fan I want and locate strings.

GHS long scale plus work on 36" i don't know about 37 though...

i tried a set on my dingwall and theyre almost TOO long. i went back to d'addario longs.

but for a long scale, those dingwalls are incredibly well designed.

So, the D'Addario super longs would work on 37" scale???? Innnteresting. Juststrings.com seems to have a wide variety of the D'Addario XL strings in super long, which would give me plenty of room to play with different gauges until I find something that feels right. At that point, buy in extreme bulk!!!
