fanned frets.. what the freak?

put your elbow down on your desk with your hand straight up. Without dragging or moving your elbow, move your hand left and right like an upside down pendulum.

Notice there is only one place where your finger would be parallel to your bass frets, that is when your hand is straight up. at all other times, your fingers would be at an angle with a fretboard.

Make sense? That's ergonomics.

Also add string tension, intonation to the benefits.
 
Increased harmonic content.

It's based on a piano. If all the strings in a piano were the same length the piano would not reach it's full potential.
