I've seen some basses with frets that come out from the one side of the neck and fan out. i have no idea why anyone would want that. can someone let me know what thats all about because it seems like a stupid idea to me.

It's based on a piano. If all the strings in a piano were the same length the piano would not reach it's full potential.
