Faster..faster...FASTER

It all depends. Precision can be important but I am probably going to be looking at being in a crappy punk band soon so it's probably that I will have to figure out how to impress them. Unfortunately many punk bands demand I play pick style because they think it's faster and cleaner. I can make my bass sound like a fast picked bass (as was evidenced). Of course I am not going for precision at 480bmp.

I dont think that was really fast dude..... im sure you would play much faster and more prescise with 3 fingers. I use 3 fingers and i can play about twice as fast as that with no problem *brag* :D

this is an excercise I made up to practice speed/accuracy

then

alternate between the two patterns as fast as you can while staying clean

I listened to the Mp3s and I'm sorry but thats pretty slow. But either way, speed is not what you are going to want. you are going to want to kno how to play the bass. I think the punk band will like it better if you can play good melodies and fill ins. Playing what the guitar player is playing is going to sound ok, but if you can make his guitar part stick out and outline the chord, i think that musically it will sound awesome. unless your in thrash punk.

I agree with JMX... Not trying to come across as an *******, but crappy playing sounds crappy regardless of the speed at which it's played..

There are more important things that you could and should work on other than speed.

i think it is much harder to play slow (musically) than play fast.

as miles said, if you can't play a ballad, you ain't sh*t.

pac's right, playing fast will not get you a gig, in fact it may get you fired, but then again, who in the heck listens to me

Yikes, I can play that fast and I'm slow. :eek: Sorry. I've never made speed a focus, which is odd due to the fact that I'm a metal head at heart. I've always worried about feel before speed. My bass playing and listening can sometimes be worlds apart. When it comes down to it, I'm just a Claypool wannabe. :(

why not just play with a pick? It's not like playing with a pick makes you any less of a bassist, or degrades you somehow. It's just a different technique that happens to characterize the punk style.

Uh, first I'd like to say that I'm with the whole this is stupid crowd, but your main point is, "That won't get you gigs." Once again I come in defense of speed. Gigs aren't all of our priorities, some of us aren't sellouts. ;)

The main point is speed comes out of good technique. Which I have neither so I'll stop typing right.............................*#*)#(*#)(@&# akkbkapdiupowkpoopiepoopiepoopiepieopiuepwor... now.

I like to think of this whole discussion as the difference between a sprinter and a dancer of some sort.

Take a sprinter for example- you can sprint for fun and thats cool and all, but whats the point when theres really no race to begin with?
Also- who really ever watches people sprint for fun? Have you ever seen sprinters when they run? They're faces are all contorted and junk.

On the other hand we have dancers. They take their time, sometimes speeding up, but they alwasy express something and can take different forms and shapes at their own will. And people enjoy watching and seeing what they will do next.
I think to myself, thats awesome- its fun to look at and it actually means something.
So I say play on!
