I'm glad to see that there is a thread on this guy because I saw Father John Misty last night in Chicago and thought this guy was truly great. He even played keyboards here and there. My wife is the true fan of FJM and I was just brought along but the bass playing got me into it. At one point I pointed out to her how great the bassist was and important to what was going on in the song and she said "Now that you pointed it out, I can hear it." He had great tone all night and you could tell that the FOH guy prioritized him in the mix. I was too far away to identify his basses but they were swapped out fairly regularly.
love this new guy, going to see then when they come to vegas. side question any one know what kinda bass jeff was using? i know its some mij short scale, just not sure if he changed anything because it sounds fantastic
Bumping this as I came here looking to find out who this guy is (saw them Saturday in Berkeley). What a brilliant player. What he does for the FJM songs was reminiscent how Dee Murray connected the dots for Elton John or Bruce Thomas with Elvis Costello. It's great to hear this kind of melodic playing being rescued from oblivion.
I get the impression he's not as tightly leashed as the rest of the band (JT really seems like a control freak with the production, in the best possible way). Eli definitely went "off record" a little, and with great results.
