Favorite bass compliments

Our old drummer told me "I love your tone....turn it up some more."

A well traveled musician who was a friend of my Dad's said "You're the best bassist I've heard."

Best compliment ever. Someone asked my Dad(who plays 30 instruments and doesn't give out compliments easily) if I was a good bassist. He replied something along the lines of "He's very good. He's the best bass player in New Brunswick for sure." It meant a lot because it was from my Dad who is one of the most educated musicians I know and he is very difficult to impress in the musical field.

This was from the keyboard player in a band that I had just recently joined in regards to my first show with them:

"You are a very talented musician, and I think it's totally badass the way you head-bang while you play. It's very natural. I'm Not trying to kiss ass, I just think it's awesome."

That made me smile.

Another memorable one was from the girlfriend of the guitarist from a band we were sharing a gig with:

"You have magic fingers."

That was a little awkward... she was pretty drunk.

In the middle of set with my jazz band at a dinner, we'd just played "Milestones" (which as anyone who's into jazz probably knows, has a fairly quick bassline). A random guy from the crowd just stands up from his table, comes over taps me on the shoulder and says "Nice bass playing!" That's it, it was just nice to see someone appreciating my playing so much that they felt compelled to stand up and congratulate me on it in the middle of the set!

...I told this one a few years ago. I am 59, so I am quite comfortable with repeating my tales...LOL..

OK...I was a prog bass player in a country band; nose in the air, Rick with Roto rounds, treble tone and a pick played through Acoustic 370 head..making $$ every week; never earned a dime playing rock. I digress...

So this guy who obviously played bass walks up to me after a set and exclaims, "Dude...you sound just like Geddy Lee..ONLY IN A COUNTRY BAND". I replied, "Thank you...???..." As I had strived to be a Chris Squire clone, not a Geddy Lee clone..LOL..

At this one gig, halfway through a song a bloke came up to me and shook my hand and said that I was the best bassist he has seen and heard (obviously not seen a lot of other bands!).

Also after we played one of our originals I had loads of people coming up to me saying that my bass to this particular song was amazing, made me feel right chuffed!

My favorite was from a guitar player that I was playing in a three piece band with who said "I love how you keep the pocket so full that I can play or not and it never matters". I had the big head forever after that. :D
