David Gilmour's "Murder" (1984), with Pino Palladino on bass. Even though Gilmour himself ain't too shabby on bass – see Pink Floyd's "Hey You" (1979) and other tunes – this was the song that first inspired me to explore the Realm of Fretlessness.

Willie Weeks on Donny Hathaway "Everything is Everything"

Marcus Miller pretty much a heap of his "Tales" album

The solo starts at 4:55 but don't miss the opportunity to also hear from the start because these 4:55 prepares the listener for the solo :)

Anything by the late Paul Goddard of ARS. Try out "Another Man's Woman" from their live album, Are You Ready. The man could flat out play that Rick.

    There's really only one:

    John Entwistle, "My Generation"

  11. This is one of Janek Gwizdalas solo bass songs. It’s called Sadie’s song. He literally is a one man band on this creating drums and everything using two ditto loopers. Incorporates the boss pitch shifter for the high parts, the dod meatbox for the subby basslines towards the end.

I've spent hours shedding this tune and have never been able to get to Marcus' level of rhythmic mastery:

To my ear, there's no other bassist more rhythmically authoritative than Marcus.
Actually, now that I think of it, Mark King is right there with Marcus as far as authoritative rhythm:

There's about 10 seconds of "bass solo" that have electrified me since I first heard it. That's all it needs, and I wish it would just keep going... I can rewind over this a dozen times in a row and never be dissatisfied:

The great Paul Raven R.I.P. massive fan of his work with killing Joke.

Probably this bass line, from JJ Burnel, Is the one that made me want to pick up a bass. Really kicks in around 3:24 mins.

Short and sweet solos such as Entwistle's bass playing on "My Generation" and Geddy Lee's short spurts on "YYZ", "Malignant Narcissism", and others are excellent. Long, drawn out Jaco-type solos put me to sleep.
