Favorite Cheap Bass

I think I paid $600 for this one. It's my favorite bass ever, period. :D

I have one of these, and it rivals many basses in the over 1000 dollar category. If you find one grab it quick.

My 81 Ibanez roadster pj. Beat to hell and sounds like Satan himself.

86 Roadstar RB 650 P/J. It plays sweet and sounds sweet but it too is beat to S. The thing also just looks cool and weighs about nothing. If you ever get a chance to get a good one of these get it.

Unfortunately it was sold as "with just a little belt rash" but it has a HOLE in it and dents all over so the 300$ I paid for it was too much. I got it from Guitar Center online used and shipped.

Noticed the same bass for sale 2 days later on their website for 212$ Called the dude up at that GC and he gave me the run down. Bass in great condition, few minor flaws but overall great. So of course I ordered it with the intention of returning the other. new one shows up with a dead PUP and other weird electrical issues. Bringing BOTH basses back today and hoping they will let me return the great condition but dead PUP one and keep the beat to S one for 212...we'll see....

ooh! I have a new favorite cheapie. Had it for a couple of months actually:

It's an MIJ "Memphis" branded bass, ca. 1975.

Cost me $40 and I sunk a little more into it to get it set up, replace the jack and new strings. Plays incredibly well and sounds killer!
this is the bass I own now as well. I bought mine for $35 in a pawn shop, but the neck was cracked & the truss didn't work. I am putting a MM neck on it right now (have some sanding to do b/c it's too big for the pocket)

My Squier Standard P Special. $279 new, only walnut/mocha colored P-bass I'll be able to find under a couple grand or ever. Only thing I felt the need to change was the neck; the stock one was great, but I just prefer a P profile. Put the neck from my '02 MIM P, which was my baby for so long, and now this Squier just kills. Perfect compliment to my MIJ Jag, which IMO is the best bass I've ever played but is just out of the price range of this thread :D This Squier is right there with it too.

Squiers are always a fan favorite. Deans also are pretty neat for the cheapness. Another brand I've played and liked is Oscar Schmidt. Never seen the name on the forum here, though. I guess they're a little underground. Bring out my bass brand hipster (they're not even a bass oriented company, they're all about the ukes! Good basses though).

I have a Godin Freeway 4 and it may be a personal preference, but I actually liked the neck feel better than the Fender P I bought for 1 week and brought back.

It along with my Godin guitars stays in tune great.

I might want to up grade the P pick up but I use the J most of the time.
