Favorite Cheap Bass

My first generation MIJ Yamaha TRB6P that I was lucky enough to find on CL for the grand total of $275.

Back in the early 80s I bought a few pre-CBS Fenders for $600 and under.

I think the best cheapo deal I ever made was $70 for a Tokai P-bass which I bought in the mid-80s. Paid for itself the first night at a gig and stuck with me for hundreds of gigs thereafter. Dumping it is one of my few instrument-related regrets.

I pretty much stopped playing and sold all my equipment in 1999. When I started buying again in 2006, every bass I've owned since then has no only been cheap, but really decent.

I have an SX P57 (old headstock) in black w/ maple board that was under $125 shipped to my door. It's a really good bass, but it's in storage over 3000 miles away from me at the moment.

I briefly had a Turser JTB-401 that I really regret selling. It had a few issues, but nothing some cheap mods/uprades wouldn't have solved, and I dug the stock pickup and the neck a good deal. I think I scored it on eBay for $90.

I've also, since I got back into playing in 2006, owned two Epiphone Rippers which I paid under $300 each for. The first was natural finish but I got in a crunch and had to sell it, which sucks because I really loved it.

Last month I bought another Epi Ripper, but in black. Used at my local GC. I don't care what anyone says, it's a killer bass and I am NOT parting with it.

I wish to heck I could find a case for it though. The thing is a behemoth.

squier classic vibe series.
My CV strat is getting gigged more and more these days ...the neck is amazing!
With a change of pots and pickup selector, its just unbeatable! I think the pickups are fine.
Though this being a bass forum i'd like a CV bass for sure!
I've got my eye on them butterscotch 50's p bass' whihc are meant to be coming out in a couple of months.

Holy crap..which bass to call my favorite?

Most likely my VM Squier, which is undergoing a body change and face lift but keeping the neck and electronics...after that my SX Geddy Clone were/are my favorite 2 basses under 300.00. Under 600 is my Squier/Fender frankenjazzbass....

Though I had an Ibanez in the mid 90's that was pretty awesome too...and my T 40 in the 80's...

As you can see, I truly believe that you do not have to spend 2 grand to get a good player you don't want to put down...

Peavey Milestone II!

I now have two of them. One is the first bass I ever owned, sunburst, in great shape. I just got the second one about a month ago. It's red and has a few scratches, but it's in good shape. I just defretted it, and now it's really rocking.

These are my favorite basses, and I play them more than anything else.

ditto. I have a 5 string Milestone. Very high output pickups. $200 after a fairly extensive setup. It is currently my goto passive bass.

Peavey Foundation

I bought it for $80 because it came with a deluxe case. I just wanted the case for my T40, was going to keep the case and throw the bass away. It ended up being my favorite bass to play (not necessarily the best sounding). I just absolutely enjoy playing this bass. It is probably a mental thing but I seem to play much more creative lives with this bass. Maybe it is possessed. I have basses that cost 20 times as much, but I love to play the Foundation.

I've had a few medium price basses in the past; but they don't compare with the one that I'm currently playing, a blood red P-bass replica, it cost me $126 new, right from the store, it has a logo on the headstock that says: "Electra Guitar", the body is made of wood, doesn't have a serial number or where it was made but has a solid smoky tone, good playability, outstanding construction; although I've made some intonation adjustments right after I've bought it a year ago, now it's my only bass; just love it!
