Favorite Christmas Songs

While I'm entertained by lots of different Christmas songs, there aren't any that fill a void except the good old Gospel-based standards. They take me back to a simpler time, being with family and listening to Christmas records on the old Magnavox Mono console. Throw in hot chocolate and a real wood fire in the fireplace. Still can't figure out how Santa didn't burn up coming down that chimney.

My parents brought me to the Revels as a kid and I've been a massive fan of the music ever since. We play this stuff around the house pretty much whenever, Christmas season optional.

I've been getting more into traditional English/Irish/Celtic-style Christmas music quite a bit over the past several years. Here are a couple of my favorites:

Growing up Jewish, no childhood favorites, but now I blast Bad Religion's Xmas album on repeat all winter long. It's the only Xmas music I can tolerate (probably because it's an ironic album).

We're getting close to that time a year, so what are your favorite Christmas (or other holiday) songs?

I personally can't stand most popular Christmas songs, the pop kind or the classic kind. For this reason I'm making my own playlist this year and I'm eager to hear other's recommendations. So far I have:

Christmas in LA - Vulfpeck
Spirit of Christmas - Dailey and Vincent

Our band plays just two: Bruce Springsteen's version of "Santa Clause is Coming to Town" and The Eagle's "Please Come Home for Christmas". We play them because they are pretty well-known and feel gigs in November-December should have a couple holiday tunes. Of course, this year is a bust due to the China Virus and we have no gigs lined up until next summer.
