I don't care if it's root/fifth as long as the song is great. When I feel like playing lots of notes I grab the double bass and go play Jazz.

Just for the heck of it thank you all for the GREAT recommendations if y'all are still logging in 12 years later been playing bass for ten years and just now getting into actually playing country, I've grown up with it most of my life and Im really enjoying this.

It's weird, everyone makes fun of the repetitive oompah feel of country, but these days things have changed. Like 1/20 country acts are bands, the rest are singers/singwriters or some other hyphenate which means that the bass player on the album is some session monster who was having some fun or making a point. Either way, the days of the 1-5-1-5 are over. I LOVE rock, I was raised on it and I have no intention of moving on from it as my first love, but if you have a modern tune, and want to know what will take longer to learn an accurate cover line for, and all you can tell me is country or rock, I'm going to guess longer for the country every time.

I just learned Ray Price's Crazy Arms as a recommendation of from the steel player in our little church band and now I got the itch, that song is basically just 1-3-5 but the walk ups and walk downs make it more then that, that's stuff I've always wanted to know as a bass player that lives in Texas lol simple for some yeah but necessary? I think so.

First country specific bass driven song that comes to mind for me is Misfits by Neil Young



Easily one of my favourites of all time - beautifully orchestrated, the whole Old Ways album is amazing as is the track Depression Blues from Lucky 13 which was from the same sessions.



I love Neil Young's interpretation of classic country and western, it takes me right back to Alberta and the prairies.

Anything by Jerry Reed is worth checking out - he is my favourite country artist of all time, especially his late 70s funky country.

I didn't read all the suggestions, so sorry for any repeats. I don't play country anymore but some of the ones that I thought had fun bass lines to play were:

Shake it for me - Luke Bryan

Jason Aldean's "Night Train" is a ball, and makes me wonder how Tully got away with playing that stuff in a country tune :-)
