Favorite guitar solos?

The nicest guitar solo I ever heard was played by a guy from Maine named Bob Thompson. Beautiful player.

Some others that come to mind:

Hiram Bullock's solo on Sting's version of "Little Wing"
Boon Gould's solo on Level 42's "Two Solitudes"
The solo on Salif Keita's "Tekere"
The solo on Bob Marley's "Waiting In Vain"
The intro to Alpha Blondy's "Jah Houphouet"

I also thought the solo in "Something in the Way She Moves" by the Beatles was a great pop solo. Rumor has it that it was Clapton and not Harrison.

Tony Rice. Molly and Tenbrooks. Rounder 0140, 1981. ...All glorious 14 seconds of it.

Junior Brown. Still Life with Rose. Curb D2-77622, 1993. It's right before one of the best pedal-steel solos ever.

Gipsy Kings. Moorea. Pretty much the whole song.



Consider expanding your horizons.






If I never hear another distorted guitar in my life I don't think I'd miss it one bit.

I don't really like guitar solos as a general rule, at least not the kind most people enjoy. I find its more how you play the notes then how many (it will come to no surprise most of what i love musically while usually not punk came out of punk).

That being said pretty much everytime Edge decided to do a solo on very early U2 it was pretty great (then again pretty much everytime he touched a guitar back then it was great no matter what he did). The solo on 11 O'clock tick tock at Red Rocks. The solos on Out of Control, New year's day, All i want is you. They're barely solos to most people i guess.

Also in the same vein, Radiohead - Lurgee, the outro solo. This is a perfect case of less is more. One of the best solo ever commited to record because its trying to rip your heart out (especially after 2:30). That's what i call a useful solo. It's not there for vanity, it's super simple to play, it's a few notes over and over, it's there because it adds something. It has ACTUALLY made me cry.

Honestly though aside from those few examples i'm racking my brain thinking of my fav bands and i either cant find any solos or none that would deserve a mention anyway.

I forgot "Zap" by Eric Johnson.



Guitar solo starts at 2:45. It's all notes but he keeps a story going and it really climazes around the 3:30 mark.

There's also a nice bass solo by Kyle Brock earlier in the tune.
