couple of unmentioned old school faves:

Martin Barre, Jethro Tull, "Aqualung"
Steve Lukather, Toto, "Rosanna"
Mark Knopfler, Dire Straights, "Sultans of Swing"
Richie Blackmore, Deep Purple, "Highway Star"
Jimmy Page, Led Zeppelin, "Since I've Been Lovin' You"

Many can probably hum those solos in their entirety--a guitarist has to have a great sense of melody to make them that memorable.
