Double Bass Favorite Jazz lines that use a C Extension?

i dont want to be too long :

to listen: Red Mitchell after 1968 disc, end others that others tell before me.

to study the fifth tuning you needennis Masuzzo's book: "playng the double bass tuned in fifths CGDA" it is/has the simple mode to pass from 4th to 5 th tuning.
Next level is represent by Joel Quarrington's books the first develope the quarringon's technique the secon is like Franz Simandl/Ray Brown intervals studies.

I write from Italy, and here the simple/cheapest things to do to acheive the low C note, is change your tuning, because the extension are taylored on your bass not all liuther has skill to add it on your bass in Italy, cheapest because you need : a set of strings, a new upper nut and eventully a new bridge, tuning in fifths are fre of vibrations that can be appear if you have an extension !

Lastly try to type on google: doublebass tuned in fifths and begin to read, there is lot of things !

Thank you for sharing! I see that ballads are the most common use for jazz bassists who have a C extension, but I've also seen some talk about using the extension for bossas and other styles too!

I’ve had an extension for 10 years now and my use of it parallels Ron Carter’s. You can hear how he was using on EVERYTHING early on when he got it and then kind of backed off a bit. I find myself using it once or twice a gig for those vamps that go below ‘E’ or an occasional gut punch note at the end. I still love to watch the other musician’s heads whip around when they hear it on a gig. Rufus and Ron have become so judicious about they use them (esp. Mr. Reid) that when it comes, it’s glorious!!

Thank you for sharing! It's always amazing to see everyone turn around when that low "C" HITS haha. I'm actually getting an extension on a new bass I recently bought; I'll be interested to see on how I can incorporate it in different styles within my combo. Also, I love how you described Ron Carter's journey with the extension, couldn't have said it better!

I’m definitely starting to try and become more mindful of using the notes on my B string. When I first got my five string, it was very exciting being able to walk down below E and get everything rumbling since it’s so easy on a 5 string, but tasteful use of the B string (like how Carter and Reid use their extensions) adds so much more to the music.

Here is Red Mitchell before he tuned in 5th's using the low B on his 5 string to great effect on one of my favorite arco solos ever. I wish I knew what instrument he was using at this time.

Spirocore used to make a special set of "Red Mitchell" strings to accommodate his (and others') tuning in 5ths. It looks like they've been discontinued: [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

The Spiro 3/4 fifths set is discontinued, the 4/4 set in both medium and light gage are still available.

Another fifths player here. @Chris Symer - I'm extremely glad to read that the Red Mitchell sets haven't been discontinued entirely. I saw some changes on the TI website a few months back and wrote them an email but never got a reply. Thanks for the good news.
