Favorite Musical...

I can't believe no one has mentioned "Oklahoma!" Every song is a classic and the story is so dark under its shiny veneer. Plus it includes one of the great put-down songs ever: Poor Jud is Daid.

We played a lot of musicals for our kids when they were growing up: Oklahoma, Showboat, Les Miz, West Side Story, Tommy. It's a great way to introduce young people to great music.

For Broadway, I'd have to say "West Side Story."
"Hair" is pretty moving, and "My Fair Lady" is packed with great songs.

"2001: a Space Odyssey" is obviously not a movie musical, but it has my favorite use of music in a film, ever.

I never knew that that was him, but you think about those lines on "You're the One That I Want" and it makes perfect sense. My favorite tune, as a bass player, in the movie version of Grease.

I've gotten to play a production of Grease twice. Regrettably, the score for Grease does not include "You're the One That I Want", nor "Hopelessly Devoted to You", "Summer Nights", or "Grease is the Word".

Favorite I've seen but haven't played: West Side Story

Favorite I have played: The Bridges of Madison County

I have come close to getting the chair for West Side Story a couple of times, but life intervened. It's not mounted much these days at the community level, for obvious reasons. One of the great musicals of all time.

Bridges is the familiar 1992 Robert James Waller story, with a breathtaking score by Jason Robert Brown added. It didn't run long on Broadway - pretty much just 2014 - but it's memorable and very impressive.

I can’t pick a favorite - could be Hamilton or Rocky Horror Picture Show.

I also really enjoyed Passing Strange. Unfortunately the Spike Lee film captured a somewhat flat performance compared to the one I saw live, in my opinion.

And Sondheim and Bernstein are genius. I love Rogers and Hammerstein too, probably South Pacific is my favorite from them.

I can’t pick a favorite.
