Favorite obscure movies

Rembetiko - an amazing music film.
Smyrna (in Turkish, Izmir) was a major Greek colony on the Turkish coast, and had been for many centuries. When Ataturk took the city in 1922 there was a major genocide. Many Greek survivors fled to mainland Greece, but there they were regarded as "Turks" and never integrated nor accepted.
Their music is profoundly moving - emotionally like a Greek Blues (the emotional tones, not the structure).

The Intouchables - It's a French movie that has about as good a cast of actors you haven't heard of as you can imagine. It was a beautifully shot, scored and acted film that was deeply touching.

i have a few faves -

lunatics a love story - ted rami as a guy who hasn't been out of his apartment in six months with hallucinations of spiders who finds love without leaving his apartment. sadly i don't think this was released on DVD. bruce campbell's description: "An agoraphobic nut case (Ted 'Joxer' Raimi) gets a phone call from a jinxed nut case (Deborah Foreman) when she dials the wrong number while running from muggers. Their two nutty worlds come together and they fall in love. I like this little film - one of the few truly independent ones I've been involved in." -BC

the linguini incident - david bowie and rosanna arquette, fun and quirky heist movie


the wizard of speed and time - stop motion animation is a major part of this light comedy/indie flick


and in the horror genre

doom asylum - horror/splatter film, sort of a parody.

return of the living dead - punk rockers vs zombies. gore galore!

"UHF" starring Weird Al and Michael Richards. An unemployed visionary becomes the manager of a local public station. The station becomes a success, with all sorts of hilarious sight gags and wacky humor.

"Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead" starring Gary Oldman and Tim Roth. Two minor characters from the play 'Hamlet' stumble around unaware of their scripted lives and unable to deviate from them.

Both are Japanese "ghost" stories directed by Kaneto Shindo. If you're into dark and disturbing, check these out--no fairy tale endings here. Avoid the english-dubbed versions---watch them in the original Japanese and deal with the subtitles (trust me, it makes a difference).

Thunderbolt and Lightfoot. Clint Eastwood, Jeff Bridges, directed by Michael Cimino.

Funky Forest. Probably the weirdest thing I've ever seen, and I can't begin to describe what it's about.

My favorite obscure movie is Land Of Doom. It’s a low-budget knock off of the 80’s Mad Max/Barbarian craze. It’s a total stinker, but it’s hard not to like it.

If you liked Breakfast on Pluto you'll enjoy Hedwig no doubt.

You're better at this than Hulu.
I watch a movie or show then as the movie is ending it tries to tell me what else I might like.
Not only is it almost always wrong about guessing what I might like, some of the choices based on the movie I watched make no sense. Because I watched "Machete" I might like a "Very Brady Movie?"
Perhaps after watching the second one I'll want to use a machete on myself?

Even dozed off for a few seconds during The Last Jedi.
Movies are my sedative.
