I always liked the bass in Silly Love Songs, it was so strong, no guitar was really needed. Not one of my favorite songs though, more Pop than Rock IMO

One of the earlier examples of the later common practice of going direct into the board for bass. It generally sounds like dry and punchy crap when isolated. (As opposed to miking a bass amp, which often sounds good in the studio, but far less good in the mix.)



However, in the mix, Paul's bassline is absolutely magical.

I actually like that direct sound. All it needs is a bit of EQ, and you've got a golden tone.

I think good examples of where you can hear a purer version of his Ricky is on the Anthology series outtakes of 'Mr. Kite'.

Yes, he sounds great on those. Also, how about the White Album? Dear Prudence, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Helter Skelter...You can't go wrong with a Jazz Bass.

What McCartney or Wings or Beatles track has the best bass tone in your opinion?

I think that Abbey Road, as an album, has some incredibly great tones. So does "Wings Over America"- actually, most Wings songs have great bass tone IMO.

See, now I really like that tone! It's just dead and thumps. Did he use foam or palm mute? Or was that just a function of dead strings?

He used the mute on his Rickenbacker with flat wound strings, ricks still have the mute, he used it quite a bit during the Beatles.
