Hard not to like a Fender headstock. Rickenbacker deserves mention, but my favorite is many peoples' least liked, apparently... I love the G&L "eye gouger."

Me too, since I own 4 G&L's.

Well, my ideal headstock would keep the strings straight, not pull them left or right and be angled so that the break angle was consistent from string to string and so as not to need string trees,

+1 for the original Fender Precision headstock : a minimum of wood for a maximum of efficiency. Unfortunately, I am too much a jazzbass player to like the neck which comes with it.
