Hmmm, never heard that show but when I did just now it was depressing, they were really out of performance shape by the time of that show.

Depressing as to me Lake had one of the best voices in Rock, angelic even. And ironic as I was listening to Brain Salad Surgery today at work and couldn't wait to get home to learn some of the bass parts in the Karn Evil pieces - they are not easy at all and I have a lot of respect for his underrated playing.

In the mid 1070s when I was going to UC, I had a friend who was a superb keyboardist. He was in a dance/frat/rock&roll band that did the frat circuit. They go from "China Cove" to "Karn Evil 9 Third Impression" without batting an eye and the guests all had a great time.

Yeah. I read it. I can understand being annoyed in the moment but not when knowing the sad specifics. So, no. I’m not looking to play “gotcha” or anything else. Thanks.
And Greg's and Keith’s rows in those days were all about Keith’s condition. Lake came across as very unsympathetic, by all accounts.

I am not being unsympathetic, just trying to state the audiences reaction at the time of the non-show. None of us knew AT THAT TIME that there was more going on behind the scenes.

Yeah. Those Magma bassists are all really great. Was lucky enough to see them in NYC a few years ago. Philippe Bussonnet is one of the scariest bass players I've ever seen.

That guy is absolutely insane. Glad I got to meet him before a concert and chat about the great tradition of Magma bassists, he's super friendly.

He tunes his bass in 5ths (CGDA) and uses a 2:3 proportion on string gauges: .040, .060, .090 and an absolutely massive .145 for the low C string. D'Addario nickel rounds.

Mike Rutherford

Rutherford is an odd one for me. I’m a massive early Genesis fan. Saw them live several times up to the Mama tour. Don’t really listen to anything past Duke and prefer the Gabriel era. Anyway, sometimes Rutherford’s lines make the track but more often than not I find him lost in the background not really adding much. Probably a symptom of having virtuoso keyboards, guitar and drums all competing for musical space. This was especially true of Banks v Hackett, which is well documented. Was Rutherford a frustrated guitarist? I don’t know but didn’t he mainly switch to guitars for his solo stuff? Don’t get me wrong, he could play bass, but sometimes it sounded to me like he didn’t know what to play, like he was lost, while other times he totally made the song.
