Favourite under the radar bassist

I’m going to give a shout-out to those bass players who were under the radar, owing to the fact that they weren’t innovators, didn’t play flashy lines, probably stood in the back, but were still solid, delivered the goods, and provided the necessary support. One such person was Chris White, of the British band The Zombies, and I bring him up in particular as there’s a new documentary on the band…


Although it made the rounds of film festivals a couple of years ago, it’s just now going into wide release. White would always play some tasty stuff, and as simple as the bassline to “Time Of The Season” is, the song wouldn’t be the same without it.

But I'll nominate anyway. Not always flashy, but here's a cool tidbit from "Wake your Mind Up".

Yessir, that is the first track on Diamintina Cocktail. I don't have that album, but I do have Sleeper Catcher. He does some fine stuff on that one. "Happy Anniversary" is also on Diamintina Cocktail, that one got a lot of airplay. He does a nice solo on "Light of Day" from Sleeper Catcher.

Chess is correct. He also wrote a huge number of blues classics.

I would rate Heart's Roger Fisher as one of rock's top underrated guitarists as well. I saw them in concert on the Dog and Butterfly tour, and he was amazing. You never really heard too much about him, but his guitar work made the band, for me. I pretty much lost interest in Heart after the split.

Markus Groskopf from the heavy metal band Helloween. Every time I revisit them, I am reminded of how good he is.

I saw Duff McKagan in concert recently and I don't think he gets his flowers either. Such memorable lines and looks like a boss.

Jon Gagan has been Ottmar Lieberts bassist and arranger since day 1 in Santa Fe. I love his playing…not flashy, not mind blowing…but tasteful, toneful, soulful. its difficult for me to image better bass lines to the songs than the ones Jon put together. I have seen him 3 times live over the years and he is even better live. Plays keyboards and the upright bass very well also!

I've just discovered Lucas Harwood, of King Gizzard & the Wizard Lizard, in their latest album "Phantom Island".

His bass lines are super inspiring and varied.
