Well a very unproductive day 1 of fearful building

Got a 4x8 sheet of Birch Ply from Home Depot. 3 cuts into it the plys seperated over a good foot radius at the end of a cut. !! I've head of cheap ply coming from china but this had a name of a Canadian company on the side and cost $60.

Took that back and after much humming and hawing about it already being cut and a coffee stain on it and whatever else (you guys want to restock and sell it?) they said they'd let me return it, if I had a receipt. I had got it 2h ago, the teller that checked me out was still there but I'm way too used to electronic records and hadn't held on to my receipt. crap.

Current plan is to glue is to keep cutting since I'm stuck with this wood, glue the plys back together and cut around any other bad areas and do whatever else I can to try and get the wood to fail before/after assembly. At worst this will an expensive practice build.

I just wanted to get the box built, I don't have any speakers or crossover parts ready to go yet so I got some time to play around.

.. oh yeah, and in the middle of this I went and visited the other local hardware store, asked for birch ply and they sold me some.. fir ply. I should have known better but more importantly.. they should know, If my job was to sell wood I'd sure know. When I took it back a completely different (old and knowledgeable.. looking) guy said in complete confidence that it was hardwood (after I scratched it with my nail) and when it rung in as fir ply that fir in fact a hardwood. At least I have the receipt for that one.

I'm studying up on my wood before I lay down any more money.

Maiden voyage with my fEARful 15/6, first gig review...

WOW!!!

Great reveiw Sundogue, killer set too. The first time I heard my 12/6 at volume I thought the same thing. Even with my 12/6 on the floor I could still her the mids & highs well. I can't imagine the 15/6 with twice the power that I had on tap. Rock on!

GB&foz,
Thanks for posting the badge, it'll be on my next build.

Glad to hear it's working for you, Sundogue. As time goes by you'll be hearing more variation in string choices, bass choices. and hand position than you ever thought possible. The plucking position thing is the biggest thrill.

At one point I did a comparison of how many BP102 it took to keep up with a single fEARful 12/6 when driven by the same wattage, and when driven to full potential. I think now you might be in a position to appreciate that comparison. Unfortunately, it's a SEARCH to reprint that ; } -- but suffice it to say the 12/6 is a great companion piece ; }

I got personal pages up for several of youse guysez yesterday, but if I've missed anyone, SPEAK UP : }

Absolutely no doubt that the clarity has opened up a wide array of tonal options. I've always utilized a variety of techniques, but they are definitely more noticeable now. That was apparent right from the first time even testing it. What words are appropriate descriptors? Tight, focused, articulate, responsive...CLARITY.

And you were so right about not even needing to tilt it back or put it up on stand. That 18Sound mid is just killer! I think people having used other cabs that are getting into fEARful's do it out of habit but the dispersion of the mids and highs are incredible! I am so glad I got it and didn't cheap out. If there is one thing I could recommend to anyone thinking of building one...DO NOT cheap out on the mid. GET THE 18 SOUND 6NM410!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey Leland,

Maybe you want to add it to your inventory? I would definately by two when I order my 3012lf. Just a thought. I would just as soon give you my money as some random print shop. Also maybe something you could include in your flat packs. Again just thinking out loud. Maybe even stickers too. Something to put on our guitarist bumper.

So, what you're saying is that your going to build a 15/sub next? ;)

If I didn't have PA support I sure would. Even with PA support it's nice to have a strong stage presence. Amazing how much louder I was playing (than I normally would) yet it wasn't overwhelming anyone on stage. If anything the rest of the band was feeding off it. Definitely added some mojo to my playing.

What its all about, folks... I can't recall how many times I've seen live bands, and the bass is little more than a roar in the background. Revolutionizing live music one bassist at a time.. gotta love it...

After concidering selling the completed but not "finished" 12/6, I decided to finish the cabinet with stain, grill, etc. I just hate to get rid of it.

Some pics. One more coat of poly when the weather wams but one coat looks good at this point. Per plans 12/6 fEarful.

After reading over the manual to my Crown XLS1500, I kinda feel like a dummy. At my last gig I thought I was running my amp in the bridged mode, but it turns out it was only sending 300 watts to my 15/6, which by the way was plenty of volume. I used a regular speaker cable, not one set up for bridged mode, not knowing that I needed one. I am pretty excited to see what happens when I get a cable that has more than 2 poles to set it up correctly for bridged mode. Good thing our practice space is out in the country, so no neighbors will be bothered when I try this out.

Also, with just sending the 300 watts, it was louder than my previous setup, which was a Carvin V210T at 4 ohms, and a Fender 15" combo cabinet at 4 ohm, receiving 525 watts per channel. I'm simply amazed with this cabinet can do with such little watts.

To me the real beauty of the 3015LF is that it has 9.6mm of xmax AND a sensitivity of 99dB. Most high sensitivity drivers have lower xmax or visa versa. One helluva speaker. That's why it can put out a lot of volume even with lower watts. It's just that it not only can thermally handle a lot more watts, it isn't as displacement limited in this cab design as most other woofers, so the more you throw at it (within reason of course) the louder it will go (which is insanely loud for a single 15).

And then the 18Sound mid is just a killer driver with its output in the mids and highs.

Together these speakers in this cab can get stupid loud even with as little as 300 watts and deafeningly loud with way more, all the while doing it with the most clarity and cleanest low end where most other cabs crap out.

Well... really crappy ones like you find on your average commercial bass cab perhaps, not applicable here IMO. But I do agree/understand that some just don't want/need that top end sheen.

I have horns with attenuators on both of my fEarful stacks so I have had a chance to hear em both with and without. I prefer em on - YMMV. Also, I use one stack for a e-drum montior and the horn is a very nice add-on in that role. Its still a hella cab even with the horn turned off but given the modest cost increase I say put one in if your budget allows.

Using a fEarful has changed the way I play - if its effects you likewise you might find out you like having a horn! :hyper:

Bet this guy would put a horn in if he built a fearful...

Tweeters rule, plain and simple, but only if they're done really well. After this weekend I am never again going to even contemplate doing without. You can always bypass it if you want/need to. I agree that lots of players and styles don't necessarily need one though, for sure.

I was at that show last night Foz. Michael Manring showed up at the Boise TB GTG before the show too, and played through my new rig for 20+ minutes, which I'll post about in the proper (Audiokinesis) thread. He uses a stereo rig and tweeters are a huge part of his pristine harmonic sounds. We talked about fEarful cabs and my nEarful ones, but unfortunately I didn't haul any of them to Boise. I'm sure he would love them though. Never know, you just might see some bright yellow fEarful clones someday...;)

Someone at the GTG had one of the Carvin 1503 cabs (dead stock), and a Carvin BX 500 amp. That really is a killin' rig, even if you don't factor in the "extremely reasonable" price factor.
