Amazing how variable local plywood supplies can be. True Baltic or Finish birch should always be specified if you are going to ask for birch in the first place. But most people want lighter wood these days, and so may the buyer research and/or suffer the consequences.

When I'm in a local home store I always look at the plywood there even if I'm not shopping for that. Seems like the Arauco around here is usually a pretty good bet as far as gluing and voids are concerned, though sometimes the sheets don't lay totally flat that's easy to work out. Fir and the like is abysmal here.

Still, I think people should look at other lighter weight alternatives (Falcata, Italian Poplar?) even if it means mail order or special order, or going for true Baltic Birch and be willing to carry the extra weight.

Someone at the GTG had one of the Carvin 1503 cabs (dead stock), and a Carvin BX 500 amp. That really is a killin' rig, even if you don't factor in the "extremely reasonable" price factor.

Tom Bowlus tells me one of the Bass Gear Mag reference amps is the Carvin BX500 due to less baked in voicing, more transparency.

...But to do it right and feel my time was well spent I would have to afford measurement equipment.

How about this idea... GB hand numbered metal badges $30 per [$50 for a matched stereo set] to raise money for measurement gear [beer]? For the budget impaired... maybe hand numbered vinyl stickers at $10 a throw?

Somebody want to pony up for the first production run in return for the coveted "007" or "666". I myself am holding out for 8675309.

I'm putting together a rack system for a fEarful rig. I am concerned about low filtering, which if I understand correctly is important, even given a fEarful's low frequency handling capabilities.

I like the Crown XLS Drivecore offerings because of their power to weight ratios, but the low filter on these amps is set at 50hz. Is it correct to say that that's not ideal for a fEarful cab?

Two other amps are under consideration, the QSC PLX1802, and the as yet vaporware Peavey IPR DSP 3000. The QSC 1802 has its low filter at 33hz, which would be perfect, no? However, this amp is a veritable tank at 21 pounds, and I'd hope to do better weight-wise.

The Peavey IPR DSP 3000 looks good on paper, but that's all there is to this amp- just paper. Who knows when the amp will actually ship.

I am trying to preclude using any sort of outboard signal processing in the interests of saving weight and complexity. The goals are to have a power amp with low weight, massive power (I prefer to let amps loaf well below their output capabilities), and appropriate low filtering capability.

I've come to realize the necessity of a fEarful.

If you can manage the drive down here from Moscow for one of our GTGs, or any time really, there are a few actual fEarful cabs around that you would be welcome to check out. Leland's cut kits look to be making the DIY build process a lot easier; wish they'd been around when I built my 12/6.

If I need to be louder than my gkmb500 I use a Peavey DSP 1000 1u poweramp. It weighs 12LBS and will give me 1000w @ 8ohms bridged.

Not sure how many of those are floating around though.

even within a store from one month to the next they can vary ridiculously. I use to be able to get 13ply Baltic birch locally in 3/4" now their 3/4" is 8ply and no one seems to know why. Dont even get me started on the 1/2" :( only other options are abysmal, OAK ply, and something that looks like inner layers might even be balsa LOL.
