fEARful™ Part Twelve (12)

I've found the limits of my wife's patience.

No more boxes if I don't make progress on the various house projects.

I'm working on a 12x12 basement room that needs framing drywall paint and "office" fixtures. (like racks and cable chases, monitors).

Basically a well wired man cave.

Kitchen and dining area next up on the list, and if that works out I get a new garage. ( I wish work would pick up!)

When I told my wife that my fEARful 15/6 was the last cab I'd ever need, she held me to it...and continues to.

Of course now I want to build a 15 Sub. I'll just tell her that my 15/6 was the last one I'd ever need. The 15 Sub is just the next one I'll ever need. :D

Tell her that you don't need it, but you really want it. Then tell her its both cheaper and quicker to make! :)

Just bought a 3015 of Ebay for $205 shipped-6 left. I have one in a Carvin LSx1503 cab that I'm going to take out, and get a 1515/66/1 built for those heavy days. I've learned a lot from these fEarful threads, with tons more to learn. fer'instance- I'll be removing forementioned 3015LF from the Carvin cab for the Impaler build, and putting a 3015 Kappalite (which in turn is already in a cab that's too small for it- cab was built by Jess Oliver out of Italian poplar, and is light as can be, but Jess, God rest his soul, really didn't see the need for making loud cabinets) into the Carvin. The too small cab will get an older Bag End 15" I was going to sell, because the too small cab will be fine as a home practice cabinet with the Bag End (Eminence, I'm sure). Ya follow?

I also bought two 3012LF's at $238 w/free shipping. Those will either go into a 1212/6/1 or a 12" sub. It's easier to wheel a 1212/6/1 than a 12/6/1 and a sub, goes the thinking.

I hope that the neos are not discontinued- they've helped the schlep out quite a bit.

The 1212/6 is a surprisingly compact cab, I'm building one for my own use. If you're used to 70's vintage size, a 1515/66 would not be out of the question.. Build the 1212/6 first.. I'm thinking you'll find that will be more than enough..

I finished my 15/6/1 late last night (minus the grill). At low levels it sounded great. This morning I cranked it up and there's a problem.

Cab sounds great; no rattles or puffy air escaping noises. It sounds progressively better as you crank it up, but there comes a breaking point. At any volume level up to when the noise starts it sounds great. At what I would consider "loud but not absolutely thundering" volume levels I'm getting a farty noise from the mid. It sounds exactly like voice coil slap or possibly voice coil lead slap. But the VC leads on the 18Sound mid are on opposite sides of the driver. At one point my poweramp went into protect mode. When I turned it back on all was well. Don't know what caused it.

The wires from the crossover to the mid are a little long; I have them folded/stuffed in back of the mid. I don't think they are the problem though. I am not overpowering the cab. My poweramp puts out 325w@8ohms and I'm not even close to that...the woofer was barely moving and it was LOUD. Maybe too much damping in the chamber? Too litle?

I'm having this same issue with my 12/6/1 cubed.
All is great till I crank it up. I'm running EA 500 which is putting out around 300 watts at 8ohms. I'm not clipping the input.

I'm running my Jazz straight into the Demeter HBP-1, into a Crown XLS1500, single channel. No issues playing into the Avatar 212 at louder levels than this.

And I guess techically the midchamber is "lined" vs. "filled." Easy to fix though. I just ran some music through the cab...good lord that mid has some bark to it. It sounded like a mid crossed over at 1Khz (or wherever it is x'd over) is supposed to sound like. It didn't make any of the farty noise at all with music. It's almost like when playing bass through it, the mid is going into over-excursion...hence the VC slap sound. It's very similar to what a subwoofer sounds like when putting too much juice into it or if a ported sub is played below the cab tuning frequency. But maybe I'm over-analyzing at this point.

If my mid crossover was bad, I'm assuming it would sound like crap at any volume. But it sounds great up until the break point. Tweet is fine. Woofer is freaking awesome. I am pretty sure I can tear up the quilt batting I have in there and make it "fill." I have a whole other roll of the stuff too.

I'm going to throw in a guess that there's a crossover problem. I bet that somehow the mid is getting frequencies below the desired crossover point. Can you see actual motion on the mid? Mine look essentially stationary, even when being played at healthy levels.

You may be right, edwinhurwitz. That would explain why the mid is fine at low/med volume but craps out at high volumes.

I wonder if there is a way to test the output of the crossover? RTA would work, but all I have is a DMM. I do have mics though. Maybe I could put pink noise through the cab, record it, then analyze it with some free software? Holy crap this is getting complicated.

My mid didn't have the right chamber spacer put in at 1st. (12/6 w/18sound) The mid would distort at higher volumes. When I put the spacer in to get the correct internal volume it went away. The 18sound is powerful though and I had to EQ my treble back a tad to get the cab to sound like I wanted.
