fEARful part 13: the bad luck's done, son

My, my, that is a tasty-looking set of cabs, Cableguy. I dig the stripe theme that runs the length of both.

Question: The clamps on the side that clamp the two cabs together; were those added later? Was the top cab vibrating off the sub or was it a "for safety" thing? I ask b/c I'll be building a 15Sub soon and have been thinking about this very issue.

They were part of my original plan. If you look close at the back of my 12/sub it has wheels. When they are attached I can wheel both cabks together like MX21's 12/12/6. I wanted to be able to take just my 12/6 most of the time. Also my driveway is gravel so I can carry each out to my car on it's own. Then latch them together when I get to my gig if I want to roll the cab.

Here's some better shots of my latching system. The latches were actually to small so I made the rings out of welding rod. Not exactly pretty, but they work. I will most likely come up with a better system down the road but I prefer function to form so for now they stay. The wheels make it very easy to cart around if I need to. Here's the 12/6 cube on the "not really that close" sub, and an old shot of the 15/6/1.

The 15/6/1 and 12/6 work really well together. I seem to be getting by with 700 watts at 4 ohm.

I was reading somewhere that you got those grills from Parts Express- or where did that yellow baffled fEarful post go? Am I crazy? I know I saw a picture of a yellow baffled fEarful with the same round per speaker grills. Anyway I can find the grills on parts express, but not the mounting hardware. I *do not* like their website, it leaves a lot to be desired! Any help would be greatly appreciated- part number, links to the place that have the speaker grill mounting hardware, etc. Thanks.

So, I would love to hear more about these cabs but apparently they aren't carried by any dealers and I'm a bit reluctant to purchase without at least hearing them

Any and all info would be helpful

I have a ShuttleMAX 12.0 and an AudioKinesis Thunderchild, which has enough similarities that I suspect you'd be able to tell if the setup you're imagining would be for you. I also used round grills from Parts Express.

If you order the Peavey branded grills from PE, they come with the mounting hardware.

I decided to use wood screws instead of the bolts and T-nuts.

I dispense with the T nuts as well, just tap the holes in the baffle with a 1/4"-20 tap. The grills are light.

The mounting hardware usually shows up as a suggested buy when you look at your cart at checkout on the Parts Express site. I know what you are saying about the PE site, it's stimuli overload trying to find stuff.

I have been considering this also. I have played a fair amount of music through my single 15/6/1 and it sounds fantastic. I have read, however, that it's best to have the really low frequencies coming from a single point or source. I am not really sure why, though, perhaps someone could explain this a little more for us, preferably with some physics and colourful images if possible! :)

I played a fairly large indoor gig over the weekend. The acoustics of the room were difficult to EQ for. The 15/6 was so deep and loud it was making me queasy. I ended up cutting bass to -8 on my Carvin amp. There must be a lot of cancellation in my practice room at home is all I can say. It sounds amazing in there too, but I actually boost the bass to +1 or so.

Hey guys-

Duratex is on, boxes are stuffed and after I stain and seal the baffles (probably a deep red) it's going to be ready for wire-up on my pair of 15/6/1s.

For those of you using the 15" round grill covers from Parts Express, did you need to raise them up off the baffle to give the drivers space?

I've seen a few posts that suggest the drives move so much that they slap up against the grills unless they are raised up a little bit. Curious if this is indeed an issue or not.

You of course will want to mount the grills so there is some nominal amount of clearance between the bottom side of the grill and the suspension (flexible outer ring of the speaker. I'm not using the round grills, but if your grills are flat (not dished in), I can't imagine any part of the cone extending outward farther than the suspension itself.

If , however, that truly is the case, all I can say is...

No, the round PE grills fit big, they clamp down on the outer mounting flange of the drivers.

I haven't had any problems with them.

I managed to get my new 15/6 glued up and the Duratex is on! That finished up the bucket. That gallon did multiple coats on five of my cabs and a few for 4Mal as well. The stuff goes forever. I've used a auto vinyl cleaner conditioner on the Duratex on the 12/6 cube and it makes for a nice glossy "armor all" like feel. Mirror Glaze vinyl and rubber cleaner by Meguiar's. Took all the out door gig dust and dirt off and made everything look brand new.

Now I can work inside where it's warm.
