Fearful Part 14: one better than 13!

For what it is worth i built a PA sub (2x3015lf, 9 cu ft) using the 'suspect' thin outer ply BB and PL. Been using it for over a year with no problems. It has spline bracing throughout also held in with PL onto the outer ply.

An alternative to dadoes/rabbets/biscuits/etc. is to simply drill small holes along the bonding joint to let the pl get to the inner plies.

Very cool! That's saves me a bunch of trouble/time. Okay, going to do the PL with some of those seep holes and use the "spoon" fillet technique on GB's site.

Thank you!!

I did overlook one reason to do fancy joinery- some people like the process and find the intricacies and right tolerances satisfying. I myself enjoy the planning and completion stages. The stuff in the middle is a often merely a means to a satisfying end.

Yeah, I hear you. I am always trying to improve my skill set in various areas, but then the reality of time and talent scarcity sets in... and I end up looking for the light at the end of the tunnel as well.

I've built cabs a couple years back with Menards BB that had that paper thin outer veneer. I just tack in some brads to keep the joint in place and clamp until the PL Premium is cured. You'd think the cabs could come apart using the theory that it's stuck just to the paper thin outer veneer, but it must seep into microscopic nooks and crannies and bond very deep. I was amazed. Once you build a box with PL Premium, you WILL become a believer. :smug:

Great pics, I'm strongly considering going the same route 15/6/1 x2 using the flatpacks

Still on the fence about the tweeters.

I recently built a 15/6/1 with the 18 Sound tweeter. I think for almost all bassists, the tweeter is not needed. If you slap a lot, then maybe. If you want to put keyboards or fullrange music through it, then absolutely.

Thanks Smeet & Domestique:

I don't slap but I do put music in my Aux in at the 9.2max & SL 900 & play along with it often so I'm torn. I could go Dayton horn to save some bucks

The only things I'm wondering about is shunt capacitor & Deep Dish Handles!

Dayton horn works just fine IMO.

Thanks, I may go this route. I'll do some research to determine how much of an upgrade the other tweet is vs the Dayton

BTW

My biggest desire with going fearful is off axis performance. Does anybody have any charts, clips, proof of such?

After reading & researching for the last week from Greenboy, Barefaced, Bill Fitz... I did some listening off axis of my gear & man... my 10s perform like garbage vs my 15s. I play in a huge wide round church & often times 10' behind my cab. With my 10s all I hear is boom & mud, with my 15s its much better. I'm hoping to improve on that Fearfuls.

I'd love to see some stuff that shows the offaxis performance in action!

Also I was looking into the speakerhardware flat packs for two 15/6/1s but according to this image I'd need to reverse the tweet & midrange driver in 1 of em. Is that reversal available in a flatpack?

Look into a 15sub if you are always going to be using the two cabs together. Save some cash on the drivers and flatpack.

Leland CAN do a reverse baffle flatpack for you upon request.

As for off-axis performance. I believe greenboy designed the fearfuls with that in mind.

Any measurements, tests, clips of said off axis performance improvements?

EDIT: I know theoretically its better but if theres no testing, clips etc... is there a percentage improvement guess from from center axis estimation? Maybe I'm asking the impossible

well, at a gig last weekend my 1212/6/1 was directly to the side of me, at least 10 feet away, on the other side of a guitar player and his rig. It was angled in some, so I was standing about 70-80 degrees off center (with straight on figured as 0 and straight to one side at 90 degrees).

Not a problem at all. Clear as a bell, in fact. Anecdotal of course, but I figure that's pretty good.
